forestrouse -> Experience Bonus for AI? (6/10/2020 8:03:48 PM)

Hi. I just finished the Barbarossa game where I the AI was expert with 20% MPP bonus and +2 experience bonus as Axis. This led to what I thought were unrealistic situations

* Basically no losses for any Axis units - went through Soviet/UK Units like a hot knife through butter on all fronts. Certainly this behavior is partially is what should be expected in 1941, but there still should have been Axis losses. Army Group South encountered heavy resistance in 1941 which is why Guderian was ordered south instead of continuing onto Moscow from Smolensk in 1941 and was reporting serious/critical difficulties in November 1941 in the attack on Moscow.

* Soviet Infantry basically useless even with a large advantage (like 5 infantry corps/army against 1 Axis infantry corps/army)

* Shock Armies not having any effect in Winter 41

* Soviet minors and the Italian army units were more powerful than the Soviet and UK units they faced. Ariete tanks were very powerful units in North Africa with this experience bonus (basically unstoppable) and Soviet infantry could not dent Rumanian or Hungarian units.

* Even though there were huge holes in the Axis lines, there was no way for the Soviets to exploit it in Winter 41.

* To be fair, the Soviets side (me) were able to pick off over extended tank corps with very concentrated attacks.

I can say that in part history was preserved in that Germans cut off Leningrad but could not take it. Moscow was attacked and a couple of the fortifications fell, but Moscow as going to hold and in the South Stalingrad was approached and attacked but the German forces were overextended. None of these cities fell with experience bonus +2, but the Soviets could not then rout the overextended Axis forces. The only a-historic change with experience +2 was the Rommel was advancing though the Caucasus mountains after taking the entire Middle East.

I reread the Beta test AAR where it was mentioned that he set the experience bonus to 0 for the expert AI with 20% MPP bonus. I set the experience bonus to 0 in July 1943 and, as expected, the Allies went on to a decisive victory - a year later than history - but a decisive victory non-the-less.

My question is has anyone else played with the experience bonus? What is a good level of experience advantage for the AI that makes the game challanging but keeping things within the realm of reasonablity?

At first you can adjust the difficulty at any given point, when you reload a savegame. You can also set the lvl to Expert, and then reduce single measures as wished (expert lvl without scouting bonus p.e.).

2 XP-points are tough, like in "really tough". As you mentioned, xp is the best way for units to avoid losses (better technology just increases the enemy losses, but doesn`t reduce your own in most cases). There are nevertheless scenarios where they are necessary to add to the feeling, like playing the 44 campaign as Axis.

The ultimate player xp is to play PbEM++ of course, and you will probably find other players on your own xp-lvl. The AI just doesn`t hurt you the same way as other players do, and that`s what you came here for, didn`t you?[:D]
