From the manual chance to hit is derived from the ratio of the relevant attack type to hitpoints. Hitpoints aren't mentioned as behaving like hitpoints anywhere I saw, and seem to behave analogous to armor class in D&D.
The manual states there are three kinds of hits; kill hits, retreat hits, and pin hits and describes what they all do.
How is the kind of hit determined? Is it a simple 33% chance of any? Is there any way to manipulate it?
Kill hits from my observation seem to be less than 33% of hits as I usually will have quite a lot of units with 5 hits and no kills with a few units getting one or two kills, probably closer to 1/10 kill rate.
If I'm correct about how hitpoints function implore the name be changed.

You are right the manual does not break this down.

Best guess it's going to be a pretty complicated algorithm based on the difference between the attack and defense roll, the type of units, the type of weapons and armour, the modifiers in play, whether a unit has a special combat status (ie breakthrough) etc.

Probably not worth worrying about too much. You will develop a sense for it.

Yes hitpoints is a super confusing name and yes they are much more like AC. Sometimes the game just calls them soft and hard defense. This should be the standard term and hitpoints should be phased out entirely. Happy to be convinced otherwise though.

Pretty sure soft and hard defense are your attack values on defense, not hitpoints.

Oh right true. You see confusing. They are separate values.

There must be a better name than hitpoints though. Hitpoints are damage you take until you die in every other game.

I believe some units have different hitpoint values against infantry and against armor, further confusing things.

Indeed. This kill roll is, if I'm not mistaken, and if we forget about for now others stats obfuscated by the fog of war when it pertains to opposing units, the only thing not exposed in the detailed combat report.

I suspect it must be a very esoteric formula. [:'(]

Yup. Neither the hit, the pinned, or the retreat percentages are shown in log... arguably the most important rolls.

Combat is complicated. If you want to know how it works - and thus just how usefull certain unit feats really are - Manual 5.10.15 is your best starting point.

Comparing hitpoints to D&D AC is a good comparision, as that is what the enemy has to overcome with the fitting attack value (based on hard/soft and who is attacker/defender on the strategic level).
