Relevancy:
Model Design Council, Build upon existing model, Change model name

Issue:
Changing a name of the original unit changes the name of improved unit also and vice versa.
Roman numeral is forced to the new improved model name, which you can't remove.
Building upon existing "M1 Abrams", improved models will be named "M1 Abrams II", "M1 Abrams III" etc.

Suggestion:
Full control for naming improved model names.
Using the previous example, building upon "M1 Abrams", improved models could be named "M1A1 Abrams", "M1A2 Abrams" etc.

I also agree. I really thought I had hit a bug when my first two models of light tank (one with an HE "Howitzer" and one with an AT gun) kept renaming each other when I tried to differentiate them.

(Actually I'm not entirely sure I didn't hit a bug because iirc trying to rename either just renamed one of them and the other one was stuck with the original auto generated name regardless.)

In any case I would really like the ability to fully customize model names so I can do stuff like the OP is suggesting with customized rp friendly naming schemes for model iterations and dropping in nicknames or even just gameplay notes for myself on this or that model.
