CapAndGown -> Riga on turn 1 (6/27/2020 11:28:49 PM)

I have seen Riga taken on turn 1 in a few AARs. I don't get it. Was there a change in the 12.0? series? I can't get enough fire power there on turn 1 to defeat that NKVD division.

nvm. I guess assigning TWO pioneer battalions to the 6th PZ will do the trick.

It always worked. But you have to cross the river and attack from the east.

I always attack from the east. I just tried it again, and it failed with just the 6th PZ. So I retried with both 6th and 1st Pz. 1st attack failed. Then I assigned pioneers to both units plus a PzJgr and some flak and it work.

I would say that the outcome can be highly variable and the only sure route to success is to bring both Pz divisions.

I have rerun the test several more times and each time I go up there the CV value for the NKVD div shows as something different, sometimes 9, sometimes 11. After a failed attack, it tends to go up. So I am thinking that the best route here is go up there with one pz div, assign your pioneer battalions, and if the first attack fails, bring up the other pz div before attacking again. This will mean only one bridgehead over the Dvina, but at least Riga will be cleared on turn one.

I do this right from the beginning. I've never taken Riga with 1 division.

Why is it important to take Riga T1? It leaves 2 Pz Divisions way out of position to start T2, and it is easy to isolate everything else west of the Dvina while just screening Riga.

Leaving a working port means that more divisions can be transported in to ruin your pocket. Taking Riga also means you isolate NW front, and it has to be reconstituted in the Urals. I've also never had my first attack fail. Bring up PzG 2 for leader rolls and don't ground bomb beforehand (because that nullifies first turn first attack disruption).
