Abrslam -> Appointing SHQ commander? (7/1/2020 12:25:52 AM)

I recently formed my first multi unit formation (yay!), and was asked on the following turn to appoint a leader. Being the clever one that I am I decided to postpone and see if I can use a stratagem card to gain some better potential leaders. Now that I'm ready to appoint someone, I can't figure out how to do it. Please help! The 1st Infantry Brigade needs a leader!

P.S. What a great game this is!

Never had the problem as any old commander will do for OHQ he will probably die in battle anyway. Try the right side bar the bottom 3 choices on first right side bar is units.

You will be asked for a leader for the OHQ every single turn.

Few people look for someone with high value for these units. They are somewhat prone to die. Herism has them lead units from the front. "Leade from the front" has the provide morale bonuses. Poor Personal Combat Skill kills them.

I personally do look for someone decent. While the SHQ commander roll is nice and all, there are a lot of OHQ only skills. Particulary the varrious tactics, Leadership, Operational Command. Sometime even Survival.

So, better to put cowardly leader who stays in the rear to provide tactical command as he should, instead of playing Rambo Centurion in the front of the formation.

Practically if General-ranked commander of brigade or larger unit is in the front ditches in the first place or is killed by anything but a superb sniper, something in the OOB and organization is terribly wrong...

Sometimes action breaks out when you are visiting the troops at the front.
And history is litterred with the corpses of armies, that fell when the commander retreated.

Leading from the Front allows that skill to be used. And a decent personal combat roll seems to work okay at keeping them aive.
