Whats with all the collisions now in convoys ? Guaranteed at least one or more now in the convoys I run...Ok they are "large" approaching 100 in size.

Just dont remember having an issue with them before..

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Collisions in Convoy's (7/2/2020 5:58:45 PM)

better to keep convoys at max 25 ships

but collisions are a fact in life, both in game and real life

Ambassador -> RE: Collisions in Convoy's (7/2/2020 7:04:35 PM)

I'm not sure it's coded that way, but I try to always include a CA/CL or at least a DD, to increase the TF leader's skills. Or rather, have a better ship captain be appointed as TF leader. I have the feeling better skills would help.

Maybe Alfred could confirm or infirm that...

KenchiSulla -> RE: Collisions in Convoy's (7/2/2020 7:29:16 PM)

Collisions -> What you can do:

- Limit size of convoy and / or taskforce

For combat taskforces -> if you run them at full speed (either toggled on or when on mission speed and for example making a bombardement run) you are at risk of collisions... If your unlucky your now slow taskforce will end up in divebomber range...

Another nice event is running your ship aground (happened to my single LSD in the DEI campaign 1942 in one of my PBEMs, sinking it)

BBfanboy -> RE: Collisions in Convoy's (7/2/2020 9:17:16 PM)

A lot of people pay no attention to the Naval skill of their xAP/xAK captains. I go through them when they get to port at the beginning of the game and replace them if I can do it without paying PP or using a very high skilled skipper needed for warships.

xAPs generally get someone with ~40 Naval skill. Those that convert to APAs get ~50 skill.
Larger xAKs get skippers in the 32-36 range. Smaller xAKs get 27-32 range. xAKLs get 21-30 range.

Good captains are not always available, especially in the very shallow Commonwealth pool. I try to put these ships in a TF with a flagship having a high Naval and Leadership skill.

TFs are usually less than 15 ships. I have very few collisions.

The other reason to draw better captains for your merchants is that it increases their chances of dodging attacks (like torps) or of handling the damage from attacks.

Ah, AFB woes. Japan on the other hand would be hard pressed to run out of 50+ captains for all the needs.
And yes, I too replace all my inadequate captains from the get go. Luckily for most of them it costs 0 PP

How long does it take you to go through all the ships and replace all the captains ? At start, I only check bit by bit, and on the first turn I only check DD and bigger, as well as all squadrons and LCUs at risk of facing the IJN/A in the first few days...

Nice link to your HMS Glasgow banner. If you want to use it in your signature area, go to your user Profile and in the area before "Posting Preferences" put that URL in the box that says "Post URL". Alternatively, the line above that says you can upload the picture and the forum will display it once it is accepted.

It's meditative. I do it in batches while I think about other things before the campaign. Or completely unrelated to the game. Unfortunately it's better be done 1st turn because almost all ships are in port at that time, there will be no moment like that ever again.

That is ideal, but if I get too tired of doing it or the captain pools seem to be getting used up, I set the ships to their new home port (most Allied merchants are out of position at start) and wait for them to arrive there before sorting out the captains. There will be some new captains in the pool by the time they arrive at new home port.

Leaders are not factored into the collision algorithms.

The relevant factors are outlined in my post (#26) dated 14 April 2018 in this thread:

Very interesting, as always. Thanks !

Flicker -> RE: Collisions in Convoy's (7/6/2020 4:06:25 AM)

If any of my ships suffer a collision, I relieve the Captain when they reach port. Similar to BBfanboy, I ensure that 'important' ships like APAs get decent Captains.
