Is there any way to covert foot infantry to motorized or mechanized? I'd like to upgrade a MG brigade to motorized but can't find any way to do it. I know it's just a game but this is a thing that happened a lot as armies modernized in real life, it ought to be possible here.

you can upgrade a "light brigade" to motorized without any research

for most others you need a staff council to discover and operationalize OOBs

Select the OHQ on the map. In the right toolbar, you can find a button called "Unit Admin". Once there, click upgrade and you should be able to change it to a motorized MG brigade.

It's kind of a strange mechanic, and sometimes you need to repeat this process several times to get the formation you want. When in doubt, downgrade the unit all the way to the most basic formation, and then upgrade from there.

You're wrong here as in depended motorized MG brigade is available since start. Game simply don't allow to upgrade into it - you need transit to it via basic light infantry as lloydster4 wrote.

Seems you can also 'Disband' to send units back to the SHQ, then build a new formation using those units. Kinda costly in IP, I think.
