StuartG -> Mixed companies (7/14/2020 7:23:36 AM)

Ive been working on and off on a mod for some time, which among other features has combined arms companies using cross attachments. If you want an example, think of Team Yankee, which had 3 tank platoons and an Infantry platoon.

It works, with limitations. Not surprisingly a really big company is a complete bitch when it comes to route pathing, but thats understandable. The problem comes in that the infantry tend to deploy from some of the vehicles other than that which they are intended to deploy from, such as the apc's.I can just about tolerate them deploying from tanks, because infantry can in a pinch ride on tanks. But when they are deploying from antitank vehicles as well, then clearly something is wrong.

The infantry seem to be deploying from the centre vehicles. Which would not be a problem because I could make the infantry carriers the centre of the formation. But you cant make it like that, because every time I mod the database to put tanks and antitank vehicles on the outside of the formation, the game, for reasons only known to itself, moves them again. For example, if you have a mech formation, it moves all the mech vehicles to the top positions (The left wing basically) then arranges the other units towards the right. Which would not be a problem, if the game didnt insist on making the infantry units arrange always in the centre, rather than to the more logical carrier vehicles.

is there something im doing wrong here, or is this just the way its got to be? Some of the combined arms teams in the team yankee wargame books look interesting to try, but it would be nice to do it without this particular glitch.

The current system where the first half of the formation goes to the left wing and the rest goes to the right wing was implemented to fix the issue where the formation is reshuffled every time after losing units.

Would it work if, for example, you had 4 APCs and 8 tanks and you assigned the APCs to the slots 1-2-3-8? Then they and their dismounts should go to the center if the formation is a wedge or line. There could be issues with other formation shapes such as column though. The system was not designed with mixed companies in mind.

No thats fine, I can see im really doing things with it that it was never intended for.

Thanks for the pointer, Ill give it a try and see if it works.

Ok, just given it a try. I find if I have a 3 tank platoon, it works fairly well at positions 6, 7 and 8. Ive not tried 4 tank platoons yet, but I suspect 9 would work.

This is good for a number of reasons, it throws the tanks out on the left wing, and leaves the Antitank unit on the right wing, which gives both flanks fire. As you say it doesnt work in all formations, I find it reshuffles in column and echelon left and right. But considering most advance to contacts and assaults I do are in line or in wedge or maybe even V, im not really concerned.

Many thanks for the help.

Ok, just for future reference, in case anyone else wants to do this.... Ive found if you have 4 tanks and 9 apcs, with 2 antitank vehicles and 8 infantry squads, the placement 7, 8, 12,13,with antitank vehicles at 22 and 23. This makes the tank platoon split and go on the flanks, with the antitank vehicles on the right, and the apcs in the centre.

Anyway, it works basically. :) Now all I have to do is figure out what the split is, when half the FV432 company has turrets. Talk about making a job for myself. :)
