Playing a tough game where I saw my first metal hex on turn 53 after conquering my first minor power. Being so metal poor for so long I got behind in the tech race. Catching up now but something strange happened. I researched walker hydraulics but my Model guy never saw a model appear to research or discover? Are there precursor techs? I could not tell or just a bug. I used walkers in other games and like them alot.

You need to go through the model design tree before the next model in line becomes available. I.e. you need to have designed, in sequence, at least one of: light tank -> medium tank -> heavy tank, before you get access to walkers.
It's all shown in the 'MNG' tab, 'Type' sub-tab.

Go to MNG > Types. You can see what the prerequisites models are needed before a type is discoverable.
