File position weirdness? (Full Version)

Hi all, I'm having trouble with file positioning.

I have a TOAW folder in Documents and another one in the Steam directory.

- the Documents folder has a "Scenario" folder with several subfolders, that are however empty.

- the Steam folder has the same "Scenario" folder, but the subfolders are actually full of files.


The game, when looking for scenarios, points to the (empty) Documents folder. However, the scenarios seem to work. If I manually direct the game to look for the Steam folder (where the scenarios actually are), it gives me an error: incomplete scenarios, and don't work. The game SEEMS to point to the Documents folder, but actually goes to the Steam folder to pick up the scenario files???

When I launch the game editor, it points to the (empty) Documents folder, and obviously finds nothing. I can go to the Steam folder and load the actual scenario files, but when I go saving it automatically points to the Documents folder.


What the ****?

The game looks for scenarios in *both* the Documents\Scenarios and Install\Scenarios folders. "Install" here being wherever the game is installed to, in your case Steam's SteamApps\common folder.

How exactly are you doing this "manual direction"?

This is because users (usually) don't have write permissions in the Install folder, Program Files for instance. So it makes sense to ask to save in Documents instead. When starting with editing a scenario, it's best to copy it to a relevant folder under Documents\Scenarios, then work from there.

Users should not touch the game Install directory at all. There is nothing there that's necessary to edit or overwrite in any way.

You just have to click the "folder" button when selecting a game. You can then go to the "Install" folder, where files *actually* are, select the relevant subfolder, and... get an error message. While the Documents folder? It's full of empty subfolders, but the game finds the scenario files there nonetheless.

Oh, and the game editor points to the empty Documents folders, so you have to manually go and look for the Install folder if you want to modify a scenario.

Oh, you mean this folder below, meant to change the "default folder", whatever that means. Yes, trying to choose that the game bugs out.
To be honest I've never had any use for it. Like you say, the game finds the scenarios in both the Install and Documents folder. So there's no need to actually use it.

This bug really should be fixed though, maybe it will be (if we ever get a new patch one of the coming years or so...)

By default it points to the Documents folder. Once you save an edited scenario it will remember its location in the "toa.cfg" file. So you can continue working on the same scenario without having to look it up every time. And scenarios should *always* be saved in Documents, as well as downloaded custom scenarios.

Yet they are not there, but rather in the Install folder, hence my confusion.
