The name "Rare Metals" (or is it "Rare Earth Minerals"?) implies scarcity and value, but I've found myself with a very large stockpiles or Rares, while my Metal reserves are being continually exhausted by construction and militarization.

It's gotten to the point where I'm selling my Rares in order to buy normal metal (whose price has gotten quite high). I've conquered 2 out of my 4 major rivals, as well as half a dozen minors, and I've found a grand total of 3 metal deposits within my lands which stretch from pole to pole.

In terms of overall Supply, I'll admit that there's still more Metal around than Rares, but when Demand is taken into consideration...Metal is much more valuable!

My regime right now is funded almost entirely through sales of Rare Minerals (to the point that taxes seem un-necessary), but I worry that I might be shooting myself in the foot if Rares become essential in the future.

Don't forget that you aren't colonizers landed on virgin world. Every easy source of iron expected to be already used, while rare metals were common in time of GR - you as "techno-barbarian" [:D] mostly lack any use for them.

P.S. Strange that you have such high demand on Rares. In my world metal sell price ~11 Cr (and still growing [:D]) while rares price usually around 3-4 Cr at best. But yean, in early games they're quite precious and sold well.

Twotribes -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/7/2020 11:52:39 PM)

Advanced techs like Lasers Polymer armor and such use Rares.

demiare -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 12:14:00 AM)

Yean, Twotribes is correctly pointing that if you will start with default research speed and especially with Tech level 4 - you see a use to rares much faster.

HansLemurson -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 1:00:57 AM)

Do they use Rares exclusively, or as a supplement to Metal?

Twotribes -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 1:33:22 AM)

Supplement well cant remember if laser uses metal or not

Most of the resource related things in this game depend on what kind of planet you play on. Rare metals aren't necessarily rare on every planet. For example, highly volcanic planets. The last time I played on one, rare metal was all over the place, but normal metal was very scarce.

soldat411 -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 3:35:49 AM)

I have been lucky I started on the seth planet I think, it has metal, rare, and a lot of ruins all over the place havn't had to worry about resources at all really.

HansLemurson -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 6:09:19 AM)

I started my first (and so far only) game on a Seth geologically active Seth world (numerous geysers), and this has given me my situation of an excess of Rares, and shortage of Metal. Recycling has actually given me more than enough Rares, and I have numerous untapped deposits sitting nearby cities.

It's almost felt game-breaking to me that I could get so much money by selling rares. Early on, I was constantly worried about going broke, and my main source of income was my neighbor who alternated between antagonizing me and trying to woo me with gifts. $400 was a lot of money in those days!

Then I decided to raise some cash by selling my modest Rares stockpile, and ended up with over $6000. I've never had money woes since. I HAVE had constant metal shortages, though.

I just had to fire a guy that stole 2k from me, I wasn't paying attention haha. He was my economic minister and I had few bad zeitgeists in a row. I managed to get 1.5 k back from him before I got rid of him though.

If his Authority wan't sky high you could instead used Secret Service director to investigate corrupt leader and take back some credits he'd stolen...

soldat411 -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 5:09:51 PM)

yea I got 1.5 of it back had to use two of the cards on him.

Malevolence -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 6:16:40 PM)

Remember, if you're selling, someone is buying. Your sold Rares (or any commodities sold) are supporting your enemies.

HansLemurson -> RE: Selling Rares to buy Metal (8/8/2020 6:40:46 PM)

Nobody has the tech to use them militarily yet, so they must just be supporting my enemy's Private Economy, turning Rares into Luxury goods. Or maybe some simulated demand among Minor Regimes. (Or maybe the planet's Traders are hoarding these into their own stockpiles and playing the long game.[;)])

Yes on both :)

All Tech Levels create demand for Food, Water and Fuel.
Tech Level 3-9 also creates demand for more Fuel, but also Metal and Rare Metals.
Tech Level 7-9 also creates demand for Machinery, Hi-Tech Items and Atomics.

It does make me wonder how the finite resource deposits on the worlds lasted for so many centuries with this constant consumption.

Just as IRL, resources were never finite until you take over. [:D]

There is two different amount of resources : amount that technically possibly to mine & amount we able to mine with some profit.

As you could guess - first value is much higher then second :)

Situation in SE is more extreme - society lacking in same time techs, funds and population for any long-term project so we're fighting about last remaining patches of resources.

The State cares not for "Profit". We command our citizens to mine metal! We know it's in the ground there somewhere, so start digging.[;)]

Maybe a better way to model this would be that deposits just get increasingly difficult to mine as you exploit them. Every N-thousand minerals mined, the "Easiness" drops until your output is basically nothing. That would also make the "Motherload" Fate-Card not be worthless.

At the beginning, that is entirely normal.
Without Lasers, Coilguns, Shields or Machine Factories to use Rare Metals*, the only real consumer is population. And metal has to shoulder all your warfare.
But try making a Laser Tank with Polymer armor before you declare it useless.

*"Despite their name, rare-earth elements are – with the exception of the radioactive promethium – relatively plentiful in Earth's crust, with cerium being the 25th most abundant element at 68 parts per million, more abundant than copper. However, because of their geochemical properties, rare-earth elements are typically dispersed and not often found concentrated in rare-earth minerals; as a result economically exploitable ore deposits are less common."
