Well that's the thing about awards - they are imperfect and many who deserved one didn't get one and some were perhaps awarded inappropriately.

But at the end of the day, anyone with a VC deserves the utmost respect and I am delighted for the family of this brave young man [&o]

I believe he is the only naval rating (non Officer sailor) to have a ship(boat) named after him in the history of RAN. Maybe wrong, but I don't think so.

Fantastic recognition for a young sailor who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending his ship so that his comrades could escape as it sank.

Yes, SSG-77 HMAS Sheehan is the only RAN vessel ever to be named after a (non-officer) sailor.
