wga8888 -> Optimizing air group attack altitudes. (8/23/2020 12:41:24 AM)

My WITP background does not necessary translate to proficient AE play. Currently in month 3 of pbem Guadalcanal play; with questionable proficiency. As the second half of 1942, my USN pilot experience is poor, scenario will not last long enough to get much better. I am thinking my understanding of mission altitude could be improved. Search of pdf rulebook provides no clues.

1)Patrol ASW default is 6000. I can often find enemy submarines but they are rarely attacked. Is there any data on altitude as a variable? There must be a too low or too high. It does not appear 6000 is working for me, albeit my pilot experience is not great and my be the dominating factor.
2)Dive-bomber default attitude is 10000. From WITP I often use 12000-14000 where F4Fs are still effective. Historical accounts are often 10000-20000. Again there must be a minimum to enable vertical dive attack. In 15+ DB group attacks, I have yet to score a hit vs IJN ship of any type, ranging from BB to transport. Have only hit a damaged SS in port and supply dump. DB losses tend to be high for flak, compounded by enemy fighters.
3)Torpedo squadron default is 5000. I remember from WITP that regardless of altitude, TBs will drop to torpedo release height during attack. But when I flew them high in AE to stay with fighters and DBs, they dropped bombs from 14K height in a range 2 attack. Assume they must fly low in AE to use torpedoes. Not sure what ‘low’ is. Programs will decide if fighter escorts will protect DBs or TBs given different heights.
4) If to use fighter-bombers to a 100 foot naval strafing attack, are escorts need be assigned to 100 as well to fly with FB?

I just answered your questions on your other thread. You only have to make one post with your questions. [8|]
