They got hit so many times by anti-tank rounds. Turretless assault guns in wooded terrain?

The Germans used what they had and they had more assault guns than tanks. Assault guns were cheaper to build and maintain. In fact, the STUG III (article tittle is incorrect I believe)was the most produced German armored fighting of the war. Probably much better on defense as the thick frontal armor and low profile would have made it a terrific anti tank platform.
From the article (the translation is a bit rough) it seems this particular unit may have been attacking across a frozen lake as part of a break out. It took 2 45 mm HE to the front hull that did little. Then a 45MM AP to the side which did not penetrate. Then, a hit from a penetrating "cumulative shell" (not sure what that is but sounds like some sort of HEAT round, that penetrated the side between treads that killed the crew. You tube video of a cumulative shell hit here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9WaMbtXTHM

Anyway, either dumb luck or more likely someone knew exactly where to hit this thing. The waited until they could get a side shot between the treads, the weakest spot on this AG
