Back in the 80s, G.Grigsby had two space games, one strategic and the other tactical where the results of both were integrated into the other. It really was a hoot!

Why can't we have that option here? And it could be an option. If you don't want to play it out on a tactical level you don't have to.

I belive the developmenttime would increase massively to include such a feature and I wounder how popular such an addition would be...

The time comitment to play this game is already pretty big...how many would increase this furthet by regularely play out the tactical battles ?

And considdering that the most common unit is division sized...what would those tactical fights look like with multiple divitions on each side..

That would be an awful amount of units to handle on the tactical map...

So...no thank you !

The other issue that always occurs with these is that if playing out the tactical battle gives one an advantage (over the quick combat option), then everyone will feel compelled to play them out. Esp. if the AI in the quick battles is dumb as a box of grenades.

I sympathize, since I feel like those games which have that feature do provide a richer gameplay experience, but for this title it probably would prove impractical.

So don't play with the tactical option. I said it was an option. if they we're able to do that in the 1980s I would imagine they could do it today.

Yeah great ! But how long do you think the developmenttime on such a feature would be...?
If they do it they should do it well !
It will almost add an entirely new game to the existing one...
And HOW MANY would actually use it ?

I said it should be an "option". Don't like it? Don't play it.

Or let wait for WitE2 to come out and watch terribly unrealistic combat results that take years and years of patches to finally get right, if ever.

And, as you postulate, if humans can run battles better than the AI who would be against running said battles?

Most people...I would guess.
With what you are suggesting a single turn would take FOREVER to finish ! It might be fun the first few times but after that it would become tedious...big time ! The progress in the war would move forward at snail pace and last...forever !
The game is simply to big in scope for this to be relistic.

Most people...I would guess.

What are you talking about? Did you not read where I said, "The OPTION...".

If you don't want to play it with the tactical interface you don't have to.

Just don't complain when WitE2 comes out with some hyper-flawed combat results.

In your opinion...how large would the unitcount be in these tactical battles of yours ? Considdering that most battles will include atleast a divition on either side.
What unit size do you considder ? Individual squads and vehichles...or maybe platoon size units ?
Even if you go with platoonsize units you will need to controll hundreds of units on the tactical field.
How long will these battles take ? A single battle...In a single turn...

You scale it. If the battles begin with a 6-1 advantage in infantry and tanks then you fight some tactical battle at a 6-1 level. Type in the results and it is scaled up in damage and lost squads, vehicles and guns.


You don't fight each battle in a tactical manner-just pick whatever battle you might find interesting.

So, not G Grigsby, but Cosmic Balance(CB) 1 and 2, an 8 bit game little more complicated than a modern spreadsheet, ( WiTE has more code in its combat sub routine than the entire CB series combined) where tactical combat in CB2 could be exported to CB1 but did not have a campaign layer in CB1, max of 8 units a side.

Nope you can only export from CB2 tactical battles into CB1, there was no strategic campaign in CB1, it being a tactical only game.
