Pretty humorous..

'The most realistic thing in that scene was the guys sitting down drinking a beer!'

Sorry Gunner, it comes off as clickbait. Difficult to take the interviewer seriously when they include The Simpsons for "realism" but omit Crimson Tide or The Wolf's Call.

Just say'in...

or das Boot yeah, but I like his comments on Hunter Killer... 2 hrs of my life I'll never get back...

I've (probably for the best) never actually seen that movie but I have read and reviewed the original book.

I would call is seriously on par with 'The movie that shall not be named' on the WIP-AE forum!

The Wolf's Call is a great movie. I was very surprised at how (relatively) accurate and enjoyable it was when I first saw it.

Sardaukar -> RE: Sub movie critique (10/23/2020 10:05:48 AM)

First part of Hunter Killer is not too bad. Rest of the movie goes bit absurd.

FTBSS -> RE: Sub movie critique (10/23/2020 2:47:44 PM)

Watched that horror of a movie, I was an instructor at Naval Submarine School in Groton in the early 90's (damn showing my age), it is painful to watch garbage depictions of what the current young men give up to serve for our common defense. Respect to all my fellow Bubbleheads out there punching holes.

Are you serious about The Wolf's Call being a great movie? [&:]

I enjoyed Hunter Killer (suspension of disbelief and everything) but found Wolf's Call utterly horrible [&:]

Battelman2 -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 6:55:05 PM)

I really enjoyed Hunter Killer. Obviously not for its realism- or lack thereof- but I think it's great for people looking for explosive action with a heavy dose of military porn who don't mind sacrificing realism.

kevinkins -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 9:22:33 PM)

I pretty much avoid Hollywood military movies. The only ones I can think of holding the attention of my wife are "Top Gun" and "Hunt for the Red October'. Sexy guys I suppose. For example, she will force me to watch "Iron Cross" down in the pool room. Iron Cross has nothing to do with CMO, just a movie on the East Front with tanks etc.. And another example is that I thought "Dunkirk" was a waste on time compared to the classic "Run Silent Run Deep'

Military movies worth watching:

Saving Private Ryan
1917
Dunkirk
Midway (the original one only)
Patton
The longest day
Tora, Tora, Tora
Fury
Hacksaw Ridge
Full Metal Jacket
Apocolypse Now
Bridge on the River Kwai

opps forgot Platoon

thewood1 -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 10:40:56 PM)

I actually thought the new Midway was better the the Charlton Heston one. I thought the recent one was much more biographical.

Randomizer -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 11:14:02 PM)

Dunkirk was awful. The heirs to the makers of The Cruel Sea, The Hill, The Man who would be King and even 1917 should flush their own heads down the loo for producing a colossal stinker like Dunkirk. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was several orders of magnitude more realistic and entertaining.

thewood1 -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 11:30:38 PM)

Also, Patton might be considered a good movie, but not a very realistic war movie.

FTBSS -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 11:35:37 PM)

The new Midway was too Hollywood for my tastes. The movie was too much the leadup to the greatest naval battle in modern history with too much character building and not enough actual Midway battle story/footage.

thewood1 -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/5/2020 11:54:04 PM)

Its funny, I felt the same way about the old one. A lot of stock footage with the wrong planes and ships, a made up story about forbidden love, a father son regrets story, all with a slew made up characters. The subplots took up over half the movie about the biggest naval battle of the war. Lets leave out Heston hamming it up all over the screen. At least the newer one had real characters based on biographies and actual interviews, as well as very good CGI of the actual battle. But OK, to each his own.

apbarog -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/6/2020 12:23:47 AM)

The worst submarine movie that I've seen was "Full Fathom Five", made in 1990. Filmed in a bath tub. The boom mic should have gotten billing. It appeared in many scenes.

Gunner98 -> RE: Sub movie critique (11/6/2020 12:54:25 PM)

Saving Private Ryan - great vignettes, superb cinematography, crappy storyline

Dunkirk meeh, too sterile, bland, boring, the only guy telling the story was the Brit RN guy at the pier

Midway (the original one only) not impressed with the original but haven't seen the new one

Patton Biography, not war movie, and hard to watch for a non-American

The longest day The best in my opinion

Tora, Tora, Tora good, far better than that movie which shall not be named

Fury really! not good in my opinion, no tank fights alone even the invincible ones...[X(]

Hacksaw Ridge good movie, really liked it, cinematography was lacking but who cares

Full Metal Jacket Yeah I like this one too

Apocolypse Now Never get out of the f#$@ boat man!

Bridge on the River Kwai This was a bit hard to take but I cannot, not like a David Niven film

What about Zulu?

A bridge too far?

And a great one for this forum: The Bedford Incident https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058962/
