marksdoran -> [Logged] new machine install, game won't start (11/5/2020 4:10:29 PM)

I just installed from Steam on a brand new machine. Win10 on a Surface Book 3.

When I launch the game I get the initial splash screen and the "Loading please wait..." message and it just sits there never reaching the point of giving me the buttons to launch the main game UI.

I searched here and found one thread where someone reported the same kind of thing but the resolution there was "magically fixed itself" in under half an hour. I haven't been so lucky yet in the last 24 hours.

I do see the following in the exception log:

quote:

Successfully loaded Sim Configuration.

DPI registry setting, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\LogPixels:0.

DPI registry setting, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontDPI\LogPixels:192.

DPI scale: 2.

Showing splash screen.

Starting loading MainForm.

Configured MainForm working area

Configured range ring colors

Done loading MainForm.

Calling MainForm_Shown.

Populated CanalList.

Added World Window panel.

Built database list.

Preparing Wold Window.

Preparing Wold Window failed! WorldWindow1.CurrentWorld is null.

This pattern repeats. I have used the "stop" button in the Steam UI and it flips up the OK/cancel button and that does successfully stop the game.

Any clues as to what I did wrong here -- and of course more importantly what I can do to fix it?? Thanks!

Hi

Just venturing a very wild guess here, but I had a similar issue on a new Steam install with DCS World. I did not install/update the Steam redistributables. Can you try that? Look in your Steam app under Manage Downloads to see if there are any redistributables to install/

Thanks for the quick reply and the idea...I'm really puzzled!

If I look in the manage downloads in Steam I see "Steamworks Common Redistributables" and it shows downloaded and auto-update enabled for that item. Was that what you were asking about?? I don't see anywhere else obvious to look.

Right now this is the only Steam game that I have downloaded on this machine. It's the most important, obvs ;) Perhaps I should try downloading something else as well to see if that provokes more infrastructure/lib downloads??

BTW, I did a complete re-install of the game and that did not change the symptoms :(

Hi yes, I was talking about that. If it was updated, then that clearly is not the problem. I am really stumped

OK, big kudos to pjduplooy for the help and ultimately steering in the right direction. Which is to say I do have a workaround. I don't consider this fixed but I can get the game to work. I'm still curious to know why this workaround is required and why not everyone has the same issue. But perhaps those are questions for another day given that there _is_ an effective workaround.

I searched but did not find much. pjduplooy came up with this thread however and that had the vital clue.

I might be able to add a bit more to the original workaround though...

So the thread linked above recommends running Steam and the game as administrator. I set that for Steam, the launcher exe and the game exe. Once I did this the game started the normal way. For giggles I then removed administrator setting from Steam (Since it complained about that anyway). The game still runs normally. Then I removed the admin setting from the game exe. The game still runs normally. Then I removed the admin setting from the launcher and what do you know?? The game still runs normally. I rebooted...just to see if that state resets itself. Nope. The game still runs normally but now with no elevated privilege settings.

I suppose it's possible then that if you run into this symptom that setting the run-as-administrator settings and getting it to launch once is enough to fix it forever and then you can undo those settings and it seems to still be fine. [I'll report back if it reverts...].

Still curious as to why this might be needed at all since it seems like most people must just be able to install and go without this fuss. Hey ho.

[Also curious why despite a very specific set of key words I can't search up the thread that pjduplooy found but I was able to find it by just paging through the forum to get to the right date for that post. Weird.]
