Hartmann301 -> Looking for a good Russian Campaign game (11/5/2020 5:38:20 PM)

Can someone suggest a really good Russian Campaign (41-45) type of game. Nothing smaller than divisional level units. Thanks

MrsWargamer -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/5/2020 6:47:42 PM)

I'm suggesting Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa.

If you are brave enough War in the East is hard to top. But it goes down to battalion and regimental.

Unity of Command is a solid product and just happens to be uncomplicated.

The only problem with a lot of great operational titles, is they wander above and below divisional.

Now if you pick Strategic Command, you get corps and up. And there are scenarios that focus on the Russian theatre.

RFalvo69 -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/5/2020 8:15:37 PM)

War in the East is, IMHO, the best choice right now. It offers a lot of scenarios and campaigns (from small operation to the whole war), it is not really that hard to learn, and it is hard to learn how to play well - always a plus in my book. You also can find a lot of online opponents in the dedicated forum.

Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa is simpler, but introduces an interesting role-playing aspect: you are the middleman, stuck between a demanding boss and prima-donna generals. Quite realistic IMHO. It only covers Barbarossa, toh.

The Operational Art of War IV has tons of scenarios set in the East Front, from mind-numbingly detailed campaigns to simpler operations. You also get all other theatres and scenarios ranging from horse & musket to modern day. WitE, however, is more "dedicated" and (still IMHO) even a bit simpler than TOAW.

Before committing your hard-earned money you could wait for WitE 2 - which will use the more refined and detailed War in the West engine. However, I play WitE since when it was published, and it is a perfectly fine game.

Okay thanks guys for all of that information. WITE 2 sounds like a good one when it comes out. How much longer?

Sometime in 2021 was the last I heard. Rather a wide window.

If you want something now, TOAW 4 is an excellent choice. There are heaps of excellent scenarios from WW2 and lots of other wars.

The Operational Art of War 4 (TOAW 4) has many scenario's covering the East Front.

TOAW 4 has a bonus because it is about 100 or so scenario's covering multiple theaters. East Front is covered very well.

Add another 0 to that number and you’d be a lot closer. Literally 1000 at least (also includes TOAW III Scenarios).

Yeah I have been waiting to see if Strategic Command 3 would come out with a new version of Assault On Communism. It was a really great Eastern Front game. So far nothing. )-:

wodin -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/6/2020 1:44:06 PM)

Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa every time!

Though if it has to cover all the war GGWITE. Though 2 is in the works

MrsWargamer -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/6/2020 2:02:44 PM)

If you are a genuine fan of pushing cardboard though, and I think you have to be for this one, Schwerpunct wins.

It is not concerned with newbs. It's 100% hard core. WitE2 will be a hoot I'm sure. But I doubt you will be getting that before end of 2021.

Go for Warplan

Which is a more complicated game....TOAW or WITE ?

rustysi -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/8/2020 1:49:40 AM)

BTW, if you are unaware its almost time for the Christmas sale, so wait a bit before you purchase.

Probably War in the East. A lot more administration and there is production involved as well.

RangerJoe -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/8/2020 12:36:45 PM)

How good is WITE? I am only familiar with one game from Marix, and not really that good with that one either.

WitE is currently the gold standard for Front based wargames (is I think a fair claim).
It's not perfect, but nothing is. I can find flaws in ASL, and A3R if asked. Steel Panthers Long Campaigns are as broke as it gets. And Tiller titles are only so good.

WitE is a type of game (like ASL or War in the Pacific), where if you like it, you might not really want to play anything else. Why spend your precious time on second best type of thinking eh.

RangerJoe -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/8/2020 2:42:50 PM)

I do play WITP:AE, but the only predecessor that I played to that is PacWar. I do like Panzer General I and II, and the original Steel Panthers. Since my anniversary is coming up with the coupon, I as thinking of getting another game or two. Something that won't take too long to play but could have campaigns.

No one around to play board war games unless it would be two cats but they might damage the game pieces. [:(]

I will sometimes play Masters of Orion II as well, modifying the game in play as needed.

I do like the idea of building things up economically to improve the position so I can overwhelm the opponents with quantity and quality.

Shellshock -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/8/2020 3:02:58 PM)

War in the East is a mountain of a game, but chock full of historical detail. The graphics are understandable and the scope is excellent.

However, it does has a bit of a steep learning curve and a bit of a clunky interface. Plus, there have been a lot of changes since the original game was released in 2010, so make sure you read the living manual.

MrsWargamer -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/8/2020 3:21:51 PM)

"Something that won't take too long to play but could have campaigns."

The short time frame requirement might be a barrier.
As you know WitP, you know what detail is about. WitE is WitP without an ocean.

If you want to score a lot of mileage with your coupon, I'm thinking TOAW 4 or Panzer Corps 2. But some won't like the environment of Panzer Corps.
And that's the trick, you seem like a person that wants detail (WitP).

I scrolled the whole of Matrix Games titles, and really, your choices seem to be if not WitE, Decisive Campaigns, World in Flames, TOAW 4, otherwise, you have to go to Tactical level for more choices.
I could mention titles off site, but, we would need to dismiss the coupon benefit.

RangerJoe -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/8/2020 5:16:07 PM)

I don't mind tactical level games, I did enjoy the original Steel Panthers.

So WITP is like WITE, but I play WITP:AE, never the original.

So maybe Panzer Corps 2 along with another game.

It is not like I work or anything like that.[8D]

RFalvo69 -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/9/2020 12:15:17 AM)

I find WitE a bit simpler to get into than TOAW. Just fire up a small scenario (like "The Road to Minsk") watch a couple of tutorials and start pushing counters around. If your situation becomes dire then you delve more in the manual and start understanding the finer aspects of the game.

TOAW assumes that you already know a lot before you fire it up for the first time: what the optional rules do (a tons of them), what is the difference between the various kinds of "reserve" and "loss tolerance" for your units, the very tricky "rounds burned" mechanism (that I always hated) and other stuff. Also, as others pointed out, WitE uses an engine built from the ground up to specifically simulate the Eastern Front - and refined to the hilt by a decade of patches.

gwgardner -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/9/2020 1:22:07 AM)

There's a good operational-level Russian front aspect with Warplan.

I personally did not find TOAW4 difficult to learn. It has lots of tutorials in the forum. Actually the first scenario I played in TOAW4 was a Barbarossa campaign. I did an AAR on it if you want to see how it looked.

RangerJoe -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/9/2020 2:13:14 PM)

Well, they are also coming out with WITE2, sometime . . .

GaryChildress -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/10/2020 1:04:13 AM)

I'm sure War in the East is a fun game for some but I've never been able to get into it. It seems so daunting and I haven't a clue what I'm doing. But I keep telling myself I'll give it a go one of these days. I had the same sort of thing with TOAW. Never could get into that one either. I know, it's sacrilege on a wargame forum. The funny thing is, I seem to be more interested in logistics than I am in combat. Maybe why I loved Uncommon Valor and War in the Pacific so much despite their complexity.

Logistics fan huh? Have you ever tried Gary Grigsby's War in the West? Depots, freight and rail capacity, oh my!

Eambar -> RE: Looking for a good Russian Campain game (11/10/2020 3:13:30 AM)

If you do pick up WiTE (and I suggest you do if you are looking for the definitive game of the Eastern Front) be sure to pick up the expansion Lost Battles. It has a number of smaller (dozen turns or so) scenarios that are quite challenging and well worth the few extra dollars.

Cheers
