pjg100 -> Demoralized about morale (11/6/2020 2:40:36 AM)

I know I'm grousing here, but still . . . it really chaps my cheeks that you can lose NM - sometimes a lot of it - when your opponent takes a NM city, but you regain none of it when you take it back. I'm facing that situation now, playing Axis, got myself into a self-inflicted pickle in China and was forced to give the Chinese an opening to walk into Wuhan as the lesser of two evils. Was surprised at the effect that had on Chinese and JA NM, although I shouldn't have been. Now I am going to have to wait until early 1942 to get my NM back up to a respectable level, even though I am likely to retake Wuhan long before then.

That's not just an Axis concern. In WiE a few years ago, playing Allies, I bailed out of Egypt and made a stand in Iraq, from which I fought my way back into Egypt and then took the rest of North Africa over the course of about a year. However, my NM at the end of that campaign remained stubbornly the same as it was when I was hunkered down in Baghdad plotting my comeback - 81%. Seems that when I retook Cairo and Alexandria, I should have recovered some of that NM.

Anyway, now that that is off my chest, I’ll go back to playing the darn game.

I concur that the effects of National Morale on combat are large and underappreciated. I have not quantified it, but anecdotally, it does appear that experience, morale and weapon strength are about equal importance in determining combat and that presumably National Morale is a determining factor in the calculation of Morale. As the Allies, it is all too easy to get to 1942 and draw level with the Axis in Weapon Strength and quantity only to get obliterated in every battle because of experience and morale.

I do understand where you're coming from here, and I may be able to make some changes in some areas.

However, when a place is lost, a feeling of invulnerability is gone forever, no matter if it is recaptured, and the scripted loss represents this.

In due course by reoccupying Wuhan and capturing other Chinese resources Japanese NM will recover due to the per turn gain from occupying Chinese resources, but I think it will and should take some time because the loss of Wuhan will have shown that the Japanese can be pushed back.

I like the current approach - it makes defense critical

I think the game would be better if the effects of morale were reduced just a tad. It is hard enough for the British to fight the Germans in Egypt due to the research imbalance - the morale effect can make it (ahistorically) a lost cause for the Allies.
As for the Russians- i don't think they need so many cities that trigger morale loss- many close to each other. Their feeling of invulnerability will be lost with the first couple. A skillful Axis player can ride the morale boosting wave so that the USSR can't fight back really just before their surrender. Very frustrating for the Allies.

NM has snowballing tendency - one nation gains, while other loses, so there is double benefit to attacker. If it happens turn after turn, defending side fights at disadvantage for some time, esp. in USSR.

That doesn't seem that impactful though. More snowbally is XP, because it impacts combat more directly. 3 dot units kill everything. That's a different matter though.

For me more concerning is that some nations have a really hard time to regain their morale. UK is the most notable example - they usually sit at around 80% until end of game. At the same time, GER can be well above 100% even with Allies deep in their territory. That seems a little off.
