The odds of 1:8 apply for infantry not being able to reduce forts but I think combat engineer squads get their own chance to do so and with high experience and a really good die roll it can happen.

In the 1-8 attack results all the bodies piled up in the tank trap and filled it in making it ineffective! [:D]

42-8-16:
The IJA takes one on the chin in china, but John has plenty more reserves to take up the slack.

In AussieLand the now famous(90exp) 5th IJA Div is completely surrounded and out of supply.

The nearest units are 300kilos north at Normanton laying siege.

IJAAF is starting to react with long bombing runs and zero ftr sweeps from Portland Roads.

This position is so far from a Jap airfield John is unable to CAP the hex.

Allied b-17/25s have made daily bombing runs for a week.

John 3rd -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/4/2021 4:01:29 PM)

August 16, 1942
Tennant Creek, Australia
2000 Hours (local)

IJN Commander Nojima walks down the dressed ranks of the 1st SNLF Assault (Paratrooper) Brigade. Nearly 2,500 masterfully trained troops stand and hear their commander exhort them on the upcoming drop.

"Men! We have waited for an opportunity to strike at our opponent for over six months. After our brilliantly successful drops in Mindanao and Java, we have trained for this moment of maximum effectiveness. You waited in Singapore, moved to Burma for three months, and have now come to Australia. Our brilliant Navy Minister Yamamoto has directly ordered our assault.

Today we strike Cloncurry! As you know over the last 10 days the army has allowed our 5th Infantry Division to serve as 'bait' to lure the Australian and American troops to deploy west of the town. Reconnaissance now reveals that the town is held by service troops.

The time is now!

This morning will see the total commitment of our Fighters and Bombers to soften up the enemy positions. We shall board our transports and drop on Cloncurry at dawn.

The Naval Minister and Emperor await our imminent success. To VICTORY Men!"

Banzai! BANZAI!! BANZAI!!!

(A total of 105 Tina and Topsy transports prepare to fly...)

Am running the turn now...

John 3rd -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/4/2021 5:16:38 PM)

The Battle of Cloncurry
August 17, 1942

Weather is a fickle thing. The Paratroopers are in the clear at Tennant Creek and their transports lift off without issue. The flight to Cloncurry goes without a hitch.

The approach of so many transport aircraft cannot be hidden. Aussie AA Batteries open up and are able to shot down five Topsy and two Tina. The drop itself is near perfect. Troops land at the airfield and on the outskirts of town.

It is there that the plan goes slightly sideways.

The weather was clear to the west but NASTY in the NE. Neither Portland Roads or Cooktown are able to fly off a single Fighter or Bomber to soften the objective.

Additionally, two small Armored units are present and that is unexpected.

Though concerning, the 1250 troops of the drop manage to grab several objectives but cannot capture the airfield. As the fighting ramps up, several question what will the next day bring?

Japanese Shock Attack at Cloncurry: 1-2 result versus Fort 2. Japanese loses 205 troops to just 11 of the enemy.

DRAT!

WEATHER, IN THE DESERT OF NORTH EAST AUSTRAILIA[&:]

DOUG OUT DOUG, AND THE REST OF THE WORLD, WONDERS WHERE ON EARTH ARE THOSE 3 JAP ARMORED DIVISIONS.

bigred -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/5/2021 1:22:45 AM)

Jap paras have landed on the 2/6 and 2/9 armored regiments.

Both are equipped with 24 Lee/Grant and 12 Stuarts. The 2/9 was in strat mode(on rail head getting ready for R&R down south) recovering from the first shock attack against the 5th IJA div(shock sacrifice to freeze the escape move of the div). IIRC it had 4 serviceable and about 16 disabled tanks.

My first thought was a Bridge too Far where the brits landed on the 9SS Panzer div kampgruppe.

quote:

Intelligence
The division was told to expect only limited resistance from German reserve forces. A serious challenge to their operation was not expected and many men believed that their work would lead to the ending of the war.[18] Some – anticipating a period of occupation in Germany – packed leisure equipment in their kit or in the sea tail.[19] Browning's intelligence officer – Major Brian Urquhart — obtained information from the 21st Army Group in Belgium and Dutch resistance that German armour was present around Arnhem. This was backed up with aerial reconnaissance that he ordered to be flown.[20] Browning was dismissive and ordered his chief medical officer to have Urquhart sent on sick leave.[21] In fact, SHAEF was aware that there were almost certainly two Panzer divisions at Arnhem but with the operation looming chose to ignore them.[20] Such information would have been gleaned from Ultra intercepts that the First Allied Airborne Army was not privy to and therefore could not act upon themselves.[20]

About to be seen in China...

John 3rd -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/5/2021 2:03:14 PM)

OK. Time to speak the truth.

I saw what Paul was doing about 10 turns ago and purposefully allowed it to happen. The Para Brigade had just landed at Darwin. Shifted its prep to Cloncurry (was 39 when they jumped) and used the 5th ID to try and SUCK Allied ground units towards it and away from Cloncurry. At the same time, I dispatched two TK Regiments and a Brigade from the southward drive on Cairns and Townsville towards the fight.

This was a reasoned gamble as I hoped to capture the base and open a retreat option for the 5th. Due to the weather, nearly 150 bombers did not fly and that made all the difference for the Para Assault. Crap!

Oh, well...the war shall go on...

RangerJoe -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/5/2021 8:58:54 PM)

Weather was a problem for the fliers for Market-Garden as well . . . [8|]

bigred -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/5/2021 11:33:43 PM)

I feel alittle sorry for John He made another drop on top of 3 ar regiments in strat mode railing thru an empty town hex. Then I think about what he is trying to do to me.

RangerJoe -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/6/2021 12:42:04 AM)

Think of the poor people on the train trying to get their tanks off it. You don't do that fast.

Burma is a stalemate.
Australia is fluid. AUS air war is heating up.

8-22b:
The IJA 5th div probably will not be relieved. What a waste.

bigred -> RE: Rising Sun, Falling Skies: BTSL Bigred vs John 3rd (3/6/2021 3:44:41 PM)

8-22c: Para assaults are very weak. Jap Objective was to cut the rail supply, not hold the hex.

42-8-19b:
IJA has plenty of 90exp divisions, so who cares if one gets wiped out.
