Keep the name, Fort F***ing Hood. Or rename it Fort Murphy.

geofflambert -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/12/2020 12:20:32 AM)

It's not that. It's Fort John Bell "Wooden Head" Hood.

RangerJoe -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/12/2020 12:29:00 AM)

No, it is Fort F***ing Hood.

Thank you, geofflambert, for sharing.

wolffpack464 -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/13/2020 10:27:00 PM)

I spent 30 Years in the Army. I have been stationed at several bases named after Confederate leaders, Fort Stewart, Bragg, Benning, and Jackson. I am sentimental about them all, but I do understand the reasoning behind the movement to change their names and support the move. Changing their names will never erase my experiences or the friendships that I made. I was a 1SG in a Cav Troop and also a HHT at Fort Hood. I also was a SGM in a Cav Squadron and a Brigade there as well. I really is a "Great Place". I met Roy Benavidez and listened to him speak at Fort Stewart. He told his story, and did a great job of describing the role of the NCO. If the military did decide to change out some of these names Fort Benavidez would be a good choice. Fort Murphy would best be used for Fort Stewart. That is the home of the 3RD Infantry "Rock of the Marne" which was Audie Murphy's division.

RangerJoe -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/13/2020 10:40:23 PM)

Murphy was from Texas.

If they do rename Fort Lee, then a good name to change it to would be to "Fort Lee" since the letterhead and stationary would be the same.

You were at Fort Hood in a Cavalry unit? May I ask which one?

wolffpack464 -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/13/2020 10:49:10 PM)

Apache Troop, 1-7 Cav in 1st Brigade. I was also in 6-9 Cav and 3rd Brigade. I know he was a Texas boy, but his service was with 3ID and was a Dog-Face Soldier. I think it would be nice to be at the base where 3ID is at, plus he is their most famous and decorated Soldier. Just my personal thoughts.

RangerJoe -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/13/2020 10:56:15 PM)

Thank you. I knew some people who were in the First Cavalry division as well as someone in the 2nd Armored Division there. Most of them that I knew were in the 1/9 Cav, the Buffalo Soldiers.

So you are stating that members of the 1/9 Cav are/were "Headhunters" but not members of the 9th Cav "Buffalo Soldiers?" [&:]

I thought that the 1/9 Cav was part of the 9th Cavalry. [:(]

JeffroK -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/21/2020 12:32:28 AM)

Buffalo Soldiers was a nickname given to all of the African American troops which fought in the West, this includes 9th & 10th Cavalry and 24th * 25th Infantry.

A Buffalo is part of 10th Cavalry Coat of Arms.

RangerJoe -> RE: Veteran's Day (11/21/2020 12:36:03 AM)

I still thought that the 1/9 Cav was the first squadron of the 9th Cavalry Regiment so they would be considered "Buffalo Soldiers." Even if said squadron was in the 1st Chicken Cavalry Division.
