Gah! Why did you remove the 'back door'? Now I get the menu up top no matter what way I entry, link from homepage or typing the URL directly. (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/) :( The only difference I see now is that I lose about 10% to a 'banner' that I don't need (I find the way thankyou) and that the forum threads fail to load first time I enter them. I end up with that menu and a blank page, so I have to refresh, which automatically throws be back to the main forum page. :mad:

Alright, now I can't read new threads at all. Edit: Well I can, it's the "read latest post" arrow button that doesn't work.

We´re working on it. It seems the script we use for the main website cause errors with the forums. Stay tuned.

The Banner IS indeed intrusive in its space killing presecence on the screen. I can live with it I suppose. I would like to mention though, if a person is like myself, and is using a browser like IE, which has a footprint of equal dimensions to the Matrix Banner (while using an ordinary toolbar and URL space), its a loss of near 25% of screen space. Still to complain about it is only worth so much. I am glad for the space in the first place. At least the banner has some measure of functionality.

On comparison, I would rather the whole page scroll as is the case with over at Wargamer. If it works there, should be able to work here I would think.

That's why I liked the 'semi-old' look where the menu didn't show up if you entered the URL directly. I figured people using that method of entry already knew about how to find their way, but I guess if you link into these forums directly from other pages there will be a problem for new visitors. Well, as long as it works I'm happy.

If you don´t like the FS mode then you can allways customize it to a very tiny bar ;)

I don't use IE much, but you can get rid of the frame (and get the old appearance) if you are using Netscape and WebWasher http://www.webwasher.com/client/home/index.html?lang=de_EN (it's free, kills pop-ups, redirects, all that crap.) Once you have webwasher running you may not see the frame. If you do, right click inside the forum page and choose "This Frame"/"Show only this frame". I've used webwasher for some time now - does a nice job of filtering out the noise. Also, the newest version of netscape (7.1) has a built-in pop-up killer which is pretty nice. Have to keep IE around for the occasional website that doesn't like Netscape (like the microsoft sites :rolleyes: )

The slight downside is that if you want the free version it has a small ad banner in the toolbar, but I don't even think about it anymore. And oh yeah, you can tell it to identify as IE, Opera or Mozilla which makes it work just about everywhere. But what I really like is that it's fast and has a very handy browse interface and you can adjust it to just about any setting you like.

I began with Netscape, even ranted a lot about enjoying using something OTHER than Bills damned browser. That is until I finally had to come to grips with the fact Netscape sucks. I tried Netscape 6 once (it was "the newest version then). Worst mistake I have ever made where instaling a program is concerned. It totally hijacked nearly every default setting on the computer, and then wouldn't uninstall. Never forgiven it for that either. I despise software that is intrusive and meddlesome. My buddy finally convinced me into at least trying IE. Never gone back. Regarding Opera, I suppose I would have to file that under Linux type comments. Opera might indeed have merits, but I wouldn't know. I am not quite interested in trying Linux for the same reason I will pass on Opera. If I have to format the system, I don't want to go through any hassles of installing software not actually built into Windows. I like XP primarily because XP likes people that don't make software professionally hehe. It's idiot friendly. Paul thanks for the F11 comment, never knew that. Will chalk it up as today's neat tip I learned hehe.

I'm willing to give opera a try - I'm curious now. Les - sorry you had such a disaster with Netscape. I've used Netscape since it's first release all those years and computers ago, and have not had any noteworthy problems. I also keep IE around and use it occasionally - actually, I've never had a problem keeping several different browsers and versions installed at once. On my home computer I haven't let Netscape change any of the system defaults as the wife/kids are more used to IE. On my work computer I made Netscape my primary for all things net/html. What I've always liked about Netscape over IE is that it gives you easy access to things like javascript, cookies, pop-ups, etc. In IE, access to these options is burried, and for a long time you couldn't shut things like javascript off. I doubt that it lets you shut off pop-ups now - does it? (IMO, Microsoft is a more interested in making it easier for the advertisers to get their messages out on a web page than they are in letting users control their own desktops. Netscape doesn't have that issue.)

ONe of the most stable browser around and at least not a developers nightmare as Netcrap is. Opera is dead easy to use, also to install. Nothing "Linux like" there. That Opera days are long over ;). Best thing with Opera is that it support more newer stuff then Netcrap and did supprt tables correclty right from the beginning, something Netcrap never learned ;). Oh, and Netcrap is also really strong on layers, ... not. Netcrap 7.1 finally is something that is something I would call a good product.

Lets stop the silly browser war, everybody can choose.
