Apparently this was only the second freedom of navigation exercise in the Sea of Japan since Soviet times.

It brought the USS John McCain and the Russian Federation destroyer Admiral Vinogradov together, thankfully to a peaceful conclusion. But if the two tangled, 1 v 1, who would have the advantage?

I think the Quick mission builder might support a 1v1 clash between these two vessels.

It depends on tactical situation kind of question. General though, nobody wants to get into a fight as modern ship designs aren't designed to duke it out like WW2 era armored ship. Modern combatants very fragile compared to ancestor. Best to not ever be in a position where other guy can punch back in meaningful ways. If you need an answer, I'd say both shipyards would win. Lot of costly damage to repair or ship salvage.

Just took 10 minutes built, tweaked, and tested a Burke flight IIA against a modern Udaloy II. I made sure the Burke had some SAMs in the VLS. The default loadout is almost all Tomahawks. That is most likely not what it would carry on sea control missions. Scenario was built with CMO 1.02 and db487.

I also changed the doctrine to use SAMs in a AShM mode. Again, I would expect a DDG wouldn't be sent in without a SSM capability.

If you don't agree with the assumptions, feel free to change. And this is the great thing about CMO. You can ignore opinions and make realistic or unrealistic scenarios all day long just to see what would happen.

edit...missed EMCOM settings on the Udaloy. Deleted original scenario and added a new one.

Just ran this from both sides... It seems that the Arleigh Burke's defenses are just too good for the Udaloy to stand a chance. In both run-throughs, the Arleigh Burke didn't take a single hit and the Udaloy suffered death from a thousand paper cuts.

The key is that the Udaloy only has eight shots at the Burke and the Burke has SAMs to spare. That Udaloy II is a couple generations behind the top of the line Burke. In reality, I think the McCain is a Flight I Burke and is probably a little more equal to the Udaloy II. I used the Flight IIA in the scenario because that was the default for the QB set up I started with. Not sure it will make much difference, but you change it out easy enough.
