rsallen64 -> Quick Question about CVE air groups (11/30/2020 8:24:54 PM)

I searched for this but my Google fu is not very good. I am playing Allies against the AI, Babes Lite, and just received CVE Copahee out of Tacoma with Wildcats and Dauntlesses onboard. Copahee can carry/fly 24 planes, I believe, but came with slightly more than 40. I know US Carriers can have up to 115% percent capacity. I moved Copehee to Pearl and removed a squadron. There are now 21 planes on board, all Wildcats, set to about 50% CAP.

When I move the cursor over other carriers/carrier groups, I can always see the number of planes present. When I move it over Copahee, it still shows as zero. My question is: why does it appear nothing is flying from this CVE? Looking at the info screen, everything seems fine, but I am worried that I will send this to fly CAP over some amphibious landing and nothing will take off, leaving my landing vulnerable. Am I missing something with a CVE/CVL that I need to do that I don't have to worry about with a CV?

Thanks for your help. I checked the manual, and my printout of the WITP-AE "Forum Squeeze" (I can't remember where I found that link but it is invaluable), but I didn't see anything that covered this.

Is it still in port?

The game often needs a turn to run before it updates some of the displays. The administrative stuff like reinforcements and other changes to units happens at the very end of the turn.

CVE Copahee is a Bogue class replenshiment carrier. It's air groups are probably named VRF-3F and VRF-3B.

These air groups do not fly operational missions; they can train, and will supply replacement aircraft to your shipboard groups*.

They will do this from the CVE, or if you transfer them to a base in range of the operational area of you air combat task forces, then can supply the carrier groups from there.

When such a group is available to feed a carrier group, you get an extra option on the carrier group's screen - to the effect "draw aircraft from replenishment group" - under the current draw an aircraft button/line. Among other advantages, the replacement air frame arrives in flyable condition.

You can offload those groups if you desperately need an extra operational CVE; you will need to put a Marine Corps group on instead. Resizing of USMC groups shipboard is a complex topic, but there are some. There are also some USN VS units that can be switched to SBDs.

Edit - * SOP is to put the 'jeep carriers' in a replenishment group with fast AOs, and in 1945, AEs, that follow behind your air combat groups and provide them with the means to operate at sea for extended periods, Okinawa style. Alternately you can park the replenishment task force somewhere like Ulithi, and rotate the CVTFs to the anchorage. That has the advantage that AKEs parked there can help supply ordnance. Another advantage is that you can have a TF made up of AOs that are continually loading fuel from the base, and handing it on to TFs coming in for resupply.

Stacking the base with naval support squads helps everything run smoothly, and will also assist the activities of an ARD, and other repair ships parked there to do triage work.

Ian R - yes, that's what the squadrons are named, and that explains why they won't fly, and why the ship was so overloaded when it left Tacoma. For now, I will use Copahee to ferry planes from Pearl to elsewhere, since I don't "need" an extra carrier right now.

Thanks, everyone, for the fats response!

Your first line implies the VR squadrons cannot be used for operations. This is not correct, I have done so with all types of VR squadrons because my carrier aircraft attrition is very low.

Yes, but not unless you first pare down the numbers to carrier operational levels.

Of course. I landed the fighters and resized the DBs to 28 - the CVE capacity.
