I have this game... Haven't tried it in XP yet. Cannot get it to work. Cannot even get the patch installed because it says I am missing files. I tried installing the patch from a fresh install. Also tried Windoes 95 compatibility mode. Anyone know what to do?

I am assuming you are referring to Operational Art of War Elite Edition Volume 1 (and not Elite Edition Volume 2 or any later compilation like the most recent Century of Warfare).

I will state rather flat out, that NO it will NOT run in XP.

I would welcome anyone that can refute that, but I am not expecting it to happen.

I have Volume 1 and I run XP.

And I also spent 80 bucks Canadian just to purchase Century of Warfare so I could put the XP hassle behind me.

I am not categorically sure just what was done to the game to suddenly make it cooperate in XP. I only know that my Volume 2 disk runs in XP.

It is of course possible that some element of the Volume 2 software was borrowed for Volume 1, this in unsubstantiated by me personally.

Hmm.. I have checked them out. So... CoW DOES work in XP? Does that include TOAW and TOAW2?

Century of Warfare is indeed both what you might have seen or know of as Opertaional Art of War Elite Edition Volume 1 (WW2 battles) and Volume 2 (modern battles).

It is additionally the previous material produced for Operational Art of War as seen on this site page.

And yes, it does indeed work on XP, I have it myself I run it on XP Professional in my case.

The game has a few modest patches (what game doesn't), that can be found through Warfare HQ (or any there can keep you informed as to current locations).

The last Patch I had heard of (relevant to CoW) was I think 1.04 (don't quote me on that hehe). And no, that wasn't specifically to make it XP capable, it runs on XP right from the install (which goes just fine).

Well... Now the hard part. Finding it. I'm not going to pay Talonsoft 39.99 for it if I have ToAW1 and 2 already. Either that or I install 98 tonight..

Have you ever done a dual boot set up?

Simple process (even this dolt understands how to do it :) )

Simple matter of partitionng the hard drive, leave yourself enough room for the OS and a decent amount of room for a few games.

I have a 40 gig drive, I had a 10 gig OS section and a 30 Closet space portion at one time. Install 98SE into the closet portion, then re install XP into primary c drive portion (the 10 gig part). Was a simple matter.

When you turn on computer you select one OS or the other.

Some will say this might slow down total speed of the system, maybe so. I never noticed anything myself.
I only know it is a good way of having your cake and eating it too.

But I can relate, I spent 80 bucks to get CoW just to eliminate the fuss. I too have TOAW 1 and TOAW 2.

I have arranged to sell TOAW 1 to an individual. This is sometimes adequate.
Already owning TOAW 1 and 2 tends to make running a dual boot machine the better choice though.

Of course that is based on my insistence that XP rocks and 98 SE sucks. I avoid it like the plague.

Yeah.. I'm pretty familiar with dual boots. I had a dual boot XP/Linux, XP/98SE and 2000/ME at various different times. I just can't remember if I had to re-install XP. That I want to avoid if possible. If I could install 98 on the other hard drive, will XP see it in the bootup sequence without having to re-install that?

Otherwise, I'll just buy CoW.

If buying CoW is an option take it man heheh.

I spent 80 redundant bucks to get CoW, am I mad, nope, few wargames out there as it is worth buying in the first place.

I have no regrets with TOAW :)

Careful there. I bought a brand spanking new 2.8G XL last weekend. I was planning on doing a dual-OS with 98SE. It looked fine, until the tech. told me that 98SE would only work with 768mb RAM, so I opted to keep my 1G RAM and get just XL. It's going to be murder trying to get every piece of software worth 10 cents to try to run on it.

I haven't tried SPWAW yet. I have tried SPWW2 and it's 'workable' but a considerable pain. The mouse is slow no matter what I do. I tried running the mousectl program, only I'm not sure in what order it's supposed to be ran, as the instructions do not say. It also clocks way too fast, and the technique they advised to slow the scroll rate has been tried. only it didn't work, but then again I wasn't terribly thorough about it. I'm planning on the next stage being installing CPU Killer, and maybe that'll clear up most everything (I can also resort to try to run off a DOS boot disk).

Sometimes its all in the learning curve Charles hehe.

One of my upgrade savvy buddies went and spent an unbelievable sum of money recently on his computer.

He mentioned to me Les don't buy (insert name of high power computer part here, I can never keep em straight some days).

Guess he was having a heck of a time getting XP to find the parts. Or perhaps the weak link was him heheh.

But he mastered it all.
Now he has a dual processor machine that seems to be able to do more things simulataneously than is humanly necessary heheh.
He runs a dual monitor set up. He can run Steel Panthers on one screen, download zillions of bytes in data on another, in a small window on one watch a movie, and output that to his television as well. All at the same time.

The trick is just knowing what the parts will and won't do.

Getting dual boots to run fine is the easy part. Getting games to run in an OS that they're not supposed to run in is the hard part. I've learned OS's after being a tech for a large firm for 3 years. Unfortunately, I've moved to a more (sitting on my ***) position and have lost some knowledge. WinME, 98SE and other OS's can be tweaked to recognize more memory and such in the configuration files. A lot of it is in hex, so it takes some getting used to.

I will not install anything under 2k if I can help it. Not unless I am absolutely forced to as a life and death situation. I know how much a pain in the *** it is to get a 9700 Pro up and running. Someone of the hardware components are so user-unfriendly, you have to install drivers in a certain order to work. just like the old days.. LOL.. :)

Yeah, I had the same problem. Too much RAM for Win98. :(
