Why was a neutral Netherlands and Denmark more important in WW1 than WW2 for Germany? Why was an allied blockade of Germany more important in WW1 than WW2? I find these comparisons interesting and am curious why invading those countries is much more harmful in the WW1 game and why there is no Germany blockade issue at all in the WW2 game?

Any others anyone can think of?

Well the Germans solved a lot of their food problems in WWII by taking food from the East. Many died and starved out there. The Germans arguably had far worse oil and labor shortages in WWII than they did in WWI. But the food situation was comparatively better.

Also Netherlands and Denmark weren't neutral so they couldn't demand international trade passage in WWII. Denmark was invaded because it was necessary as a base to take Norway before the British could take it first. The Germans captured and expanded the airfield in Aalborg for example. These air power concerns weren't really relevant in WWI.

Short answer is, in WW2, Germany took all the stuff from the countries it occupied (Ukrainian grain being sent back to Germany, France being looted of basically everything, as two examples). In WW1 Germany didn't have that option because the only places it really occupied were Belgium and Poland, and so went without. If the 1940 attack failed and Stalin cut off his exports to Germany, a blockade would have been just as effective against Hitler as it was against the Kaiser. Probably more so.

So my next question is who exactly were the Entente blockading against supplying Germany in WW1?

Colonial trade would be an important target for any blockade of Germany. The USA traded with Germany until the Lusitania was sunk. Norway and Sweden are trading partners of Germany in the game already. One interesting things is to find out what exactly went into the Dutch ports that was actually intended for Germany.

I don't know what would be in those cargo holds but I could quess...what I do know is that Dutch citizens were in demand as spies because as neutrals they could travel freely around the continent. So, at least, they were exporting eyes and ears. [:D]
