AFIntel -> Understrength US Army Tank Companies? (12/13/2020 8:10:11 PM)

Hello, y'all,

I'm a noob to this game, having only bought it a few weeks ago (although I'm far from new to the genre; I spent many a deep weekend night in high school wearing out my 5 1/4" floppies of SSI's Mech Brigade, Reforger '88, and Wargame Construction Set on my Commodore 64...[:D])

I have a question that appears to have been broached a couple of times over the years on this forum, but I haven't found a definitive answer:

Why are all the US Army tank companies of the 1960's and 1970's in the database understrength, i.e. M60A1 Tank Company (-)?

The standard tank companies in the V and VII Corps in W. Germany of the period were three tank platoons (5 x tanks ea.). All of the database tank companies are 10 x tanks - two platoons.

One can obviously create a full company by creating their own database, but I was just curious why the stock DB is this way. If I had to render a guess, I would assume it had something to do with allowing the AI to use it. But a guess, nonetheless..

BTW: Absolutely awesome game. It's spurred me to want to create several 1960's / 1970's scenarios. I've spent the last week searching and downloading over 50 documents, including the US Army Field Manuals of the period for tank/infantry platoons, companies, and battalions, as well as blogs, diaries, and descriptions from people who served in W. Germany during that time period (mainly from the 1st Armor Division; my first scenarios are centered around them).

Keep up the outstanding work!

Basically, company formations beyond 12-13 vehicles or units become unwieldy to move around, as they take too much space and often re-form after taking losses. As company formations in current game are not realistic, something we will address in the sequel, we opted to add under strength companies to remedy for certain factions.

Is there a mech platoon? Because it could reflect it was typical to swap a tank platoon for a mech platoon to form a Team.

Also in the 1980's the tank companies became 14 tanks (to compensate, battalions got a 4th compnay), so three 4 tank platoons plus 2 in the HQ.
