Thinking of trying a more tactical-oriented naval/carrier game as I impatiently await the coming Task Force Admiral. Someone recently suggested to me that this is one of the better "Nagumo's dilemma" type games. Has anyone else played this and can you give me your thoughts?

I've also played JTS' Naval Campaigns: Midway, but I want to try something new (for me). Other suggestions certainly welcome.

Its a fun game. Reminds me very much of the old boardgame "Flat Top". While not the level of detail of WiTP, its a good game - AI isn't bad and you can play either side in numerous scenarios. A nice game to play while waiting for your opponents WiTP turn.

The only gripe I have is the starting positions are always random, and I'm scratching my head sometimes as to their placements. So don't expect to have Shoho in Coral Sea heading for the Jomard Passage with the transports as an example. I wish there was an "historical starting locations" option in addition to the random.

I don't know of a good one currently on offer, but Matrix is asking for Beta testers for their new War Plan Pacific wargame which is to be an Operational Level wargame. To me, that implies some tactical control of battles.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Carriers at War? I still play that game occasionally.

As to "Nagumo's dilemma", I've yet to find a game that captures that. That would need a fine-grained turn and hex system. Naval Campaigns: Midway is the only one that has deck operation and come closest. Problem is FOG is poorly implemented. Sighting gives 100% accurate position and strike planes always go in a straight line toward carriers.
