Lobster -> Open Vision/Closed Vision (12/28/2020 10:48:44 AM)

So what are light woods, flooded marsh, marsh, dunes, badlands, rocky, wadi, muddy and cropland? Open vision or closed vision? Some seem somewhat obvious but in a game where things are spelled out as they are below shouldn't these terrain types be included someplace in the following list?

19.2. Notes On Combat Resolution
Note that Restricted Vision locations actually
benefit simpler weapon systems while reducing
the capability of more advanced systems. On the
other hand, Open Vision rewards more advanced
systems (nominal chances to hit are squared).
Open Vision locations have no precipitation and
no terrain other than Open, Arid, Roads, Rivers,
Rocky, Escarpments, Canals, or Sandy. Restricted
Vision locations have Heavy Precipitation, Heavy
Cultivated, Urban, Urban Ruin, or Forest terrain.
Very few early-period weapons have enhanced
targeting capabilities.

hhm, maybe there is an unspecified third category of neither Open Vision nor Restricted Vision? It would make sense that some terrain wouldn't necessarily provide either a bonus or a malus, and so then these lists would make sense?

Otherwise I have no idea how to test that...

'Rocky' is in the open vision list, but yeah, your point is valid.

Cheers

Muddy seems to depend on what the base terrain is.

The chart for TOAW that is a .pdf file indicates, oddly enough, that cropland is "restricted vision" but bocage is not. [&:]

The others you mention are neither open nor restricted according to the chart.

Cheers

Yikes. That has to be a typo. Since cropland in most places would restrict vision for only a two or three month period of the year I would think someone flipped those two around.

Depends on the cropland. Even if you're not in the mythical "bocage" over here at least farmland is divided up into manageable sized plots which are usually separated by a hedge, treeline or stone wall. If there's a Tiger tank on the other side it's likely you'll know about it, but it could conceal an infantry team with an anti-tank weapon waiting for the Tiger to get closer.

Anyway, from memory wasn't there "Open", "Restricted" and "Very Restricted"?

Depends on the weather, I believe, if it's neutral. So clear is open, and rain is restricted.

Charts attached for those interested.
