nukkxx5058 -> Win10 or Linux or other ? (1/3/2021 4:24:02 PM)

Hi,

I will get my new computer probably this week (hourray [8D]!!!).
It won't come with Windos10 pre-installed so I need to buy a licence. And it's quite expansive (cca 140euros for W10 Home edition). ANd of course, it seems I can't transfer the licence from my current laptop to the new PC (mostly because I will continueto use the laptop as a type writer or to watch movies/streaming.

So I'm considering other options:
- Linux ?
- Other ?

Of course, my concern #1 is to be able to run my games (mostly Matrix/Slitherine) and a few indy games and occasionally a few majors' games like Civ6. And also niche games like JTS.

Do you know if these would work with Linux ? Do I need a sort of Windows emulator if my OS is Linux ?

Or any other free or cheap OS ?

Or is Windows 10 a must have ? In this case I will have to sacrifice a bit on the GPU or some SSD GBs to pay for the licence.

Would appreciate your views.
Thanks

Linux has emulators (Wine last time I installed a Linux Ubuntu partition), you will need to investigate.

re games, Win10 has to be a must-have if the above line isn't true or the emulators are not 100% working. The thing is the last time I ran linux was in the early 2010s. Maybe someone with fresh experience can tell you.

Again, you will need to investigate [8D]

Some do, some don't.

Those that I got to run on linux/wine include Warplan, WitP-AE, Bob/BtrR, Desert War, the Ageod titles (except PoN for some reason, WiF, TOAW4. Other titles that work include the John Tiller games and Making History games, Sim City (3000,4), Diablo II.

Ones that I've failed to get working include Distant Worlds, Shadow Empire, CMRT, Aurora 4X.

So, in short, not everything runs, but many do.

I have had much success running John Tiller games on Linux over the years. But with the occasional glitch. Anticipate a few annoyances.

If you're short on money, I recommend to look for an used computer. Around here in a nearby town is a store that sells used & refurbished computers with Win10. This is the trick: the used computers used to have one Windows or another, and they use license of old Windows to install Win10. So they don't need to pay for a new license, thus cutting the cost to end user.

I know Linux is the true OS for those hard core techies but personally I'd rather stick with Win 10 so I don't have to jump through hurdles to get games etc working.

Well, I can afford a new computer and I would rather not have a used one. I also want an accidental destruction protection plan with two rambunctious felines. [:(]

Exactly.

Buy a new Windows 10 system, remake as a Linux system the old. Play games (or try to, in the Linux case) on both. The best of both worlds. [:)]

RangerJoe -> RE: Win10 or Linux or other ? (1/5/2021 12:11:56 PM)

Maybe dual boot the old one.

Even better: boot and run ubuntu* from a flash drive. Then he can investigate and check if wine can run the games he plans to play.

But...

... as my experience in the early 2010s and other Linux users have said on this thread, *nothing* guarantees wine will run the next game/s he will be playing. That's the truth.

*now in 2021 there must be other options, versions

Also a good idea. I have a disc that I used to run Linux on my desktop, then I would go online and check my bank accounts. There was a much lower chance of a virus being installed on my already burnt disc.

But if a person has enough wine, they won't need to worry about running any games on a computer - at least for awhile!

Being paranoid is not a bad idea. In theory Kaspersky is "protecting" me when I do the same via the PC. But many times I use the mobile (zero protection, in theory). Oh well, so far so good.

You can buy a perfectly good Windows 10 license for under $20 when you do a little search.

These are left-over licenses from company deals and are fully legal.

Like these in NL

Great info, thank you ! This seems to be the easiest solution.

And thank you everybody for your info on Linux and gaming. Very interesting.

So, I guess the best thing to do is to get a Windows 7 or 8 OS installed, then update the system to Windows 10 to get the new key. Write that down somewhere, then maybe re-install Windows 10 from scratch using that new key so the version that you use will be a fresh version instead of an update - which can cause problems!
