voroshilov17 -> Doubt about AA units (1/8/2021 1:51:44 PM)

Hi everyone I recently bought the TOAW IV and I am a total noob here.
After searching for info and tutorials in videos, forums, manuals and so on, I still have some doubts.

I know that there are high altitude air units and low ones. At the same time, there are High altitude AA units and low ones also. My questions are: How do AA units perform in the battlefield? Do they defend only their hexes from Air attacks or do they also attack in a radius? Does AA units attack all enemy aircraft or only those with certain type of missions (air superiority, interdiction...)? And finally, how and where do the pro-players use those units?

Thanks everyone!

Generally, AAA (and that includes most ground equipment, not just AAA guns) only defends the hex it is in when that hex is attacked or bombarded by enemy air or when it participates in an attack. Some AAA have a radius (particularly SAMs), but its effect is not clear. High Altitude impacts all air. Low altitude only impacts low altitude air and a fraction of medium and high altitude air.

Thanks for your reply!

So what is the general usage of AA units in the battlefield? I guess that the best is letting them on airfiled hexes protecting aircraft or on the frontline in the same hex as artillery and HQ units. Am I right?

There's no fixed answer. Use your best judgement. Rommel used them to kill tanks!

In WW2 battlefield AAA was as much about suppression of air attacks as much as it was about trying to shoot stuff down. The Soviets had so much AAA at Leningrad that the German pilots said they would rather fly ten missions over London than one over Leningrad.

So if you put your anti aircraft artillery with your ground units the enemy air units assigned to ground support will have less of an effect on your units and you will cause more damage to the enemy air units. Important bridges that provide supply flow and airfields are also good places to put your AAA.

If you are concerned about enemy air interdiction vs your moving units then put the AAA in hexes where roads and railroads pass through urban/dense urban and airfield hexes. These are the most likely spots for interdiction attacks.

Every unit that has an anti aircraft value will provide anti aircraft support which is fairly any unit. Doesn't have to be an anti aircraft unit. So yeah, your AAA will provide AT as well as AAA as long as they have an AT value. They should also have an anti personnel value of some sort.

Also, it was sort of implied but, each unit on the map may have various capabilities depending on the scenario in question.

For example there are some scenarios that the designer may have given sparse TOE's values. For example lets say the unit size is battalions, and a tank battalion was only given 36 tanks, then that unit will need help from say a battalion of AAA. On the opposite end of the spectrum if the designer made a divisional level scenario he may have given that division say 324 rifle squads, 72 50mm mortars, 36 37mm ATG, 12 Engineer squads, 18 105mm artillery units and 18 20mm AA guns. Each of these items may give a percentage of special abilities like AA or engineer.

So it depends.
