Podolano -> Automatic Shock attacks can be avoided? (1/9/2021 1:05:21 PM)

Hi All,

I’ve searched in the forum for this issue but couldn’t find a reasonable answer.

I’ve been playing Scen #1 against the Jap AI and I’m having trouble understanding the mechanics behind automatic Shock attacks.

It’s Oct 43 and I’ve invaded Wake island with 3 Regiments and 1 Armored Battalion, and despite me ordering units to just Combat Bombard or Combat Deliberate, they always Shock attack. Even putting them in Move was to no avail.

As one can imagine, I’m being hammered by the Japanese defense force in the island (btw, which has a Fort 5 status and around 9,000 strong) and have lost already one Reg and bound to lose another one.

Any hints out there to overcome this situation?

Cheers to you all!

Felipe

No, cannot be avoided.
A toll must be shocking, and you have to pay it

Atoll invasion requires careful preparation.

You need adequate forces, including support. Not only infantry, but also tanks (lots), artillery (lots), combat engineers (lots). All need to have 100% preparation, and good leaders, and good morale before the operation (and no fatigue or disruption).
You need to be able to unload them all the first day.
You also need lots of supplies, unloading lots of them each day.

Plus, an adequate naval support, including naval bombardment, and aerial if possible.

As such, I suspect you had neither, and with several shock attacks, disruption and fatigue must be high, and supplies low.

Islands which require shock attack upon landing:

All Atolls (regardless of size),
Island size 1,
Island size 2.

The map will show any of those via mouse-over. If none of those show, the island is not an atoll and is larger than size 2.

What Ambassador is pointing out is that is you land a unit on day 1 it will shock attack. If you land the remaining 0.001% of the unit (in other words even a tiny fragment which remained on board ships) on day 2, the entire unit will shock attack. So be sure to land entire units on a single day. If something goes wrong, consider whether you should stop unloading until the troops already on land recover sufficiently so they don't get wiped out by repeatedly shock attacking.

Bomb and bombard the enemy for a few weeks first. If not longer. If you really need to capture the place instead of bypassing it.

Thanks, guys, for the valuable input here.

I was really taking those atoll invasions for granted.

Cheers,

Felipe

In this game, never take anything for granted.

Well, maybe some US tanks with 75mm and 37mm guns ... [;)]
