Had trouble with my BMP-1 getting hull down in a recent (huge) game, the slope of the embankment meant that the gun couldn't lower than about 30 degrees (compared to target). I think the embankment was too high too steep. Their tiny little turrets seem perfect tiny little targets that are hard to hit.

Maybe the BMP should've gone around the hill to maintain mostly level 'attitude' (cant think of the right technical word here).

Where in a landscape can BMP's get decent hull down positions, and if its hull down, is it in the wrong place and away from its task of being a battle taxi?

That is a difficult question to answer outside of a given tactical situation on a map.

The BMP-1 has numerous flaws, turret placement being one of them which makes getting into a hull down position on a higher elevation a difficult proposition.

One of the vehicle's strengths is that it has a low profile and on somewhat level terrain you can use walls and other obstructions to place the vehicle in a defilade position which does allow some degree of cover. On open maps, you can try to find locations where the elevation is slightly lower than the surrounding terrain or low embankments, these features can afford you some of the benefits of cover.

In CMSF2, if you're playing in turn based mode, one of the things that you might think about is creatively using the movement commands in conjunction with the 'Pause' command. I have done this before with Bradley's when faced with numerous ATGM toting fanatics. Basically, setup to move forward to a fire position, pause there long enough to fire a round or two, and then reverse back before OPFOR has the opportunity to send their regards, works well enough.
