rkr1958 -> RE: PBEM Global War: Narrative AAR. (2/27/2021 11:16:48 PM)

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Allied #11. (Continued).

2/21/21, 1:49 PM - [Allied]: Well the upside of the Euro-Axis concentration on the Western Allies in the Atlantic and in Egypt is that you've pretty much left the Soviets alone and accepted a stalemate for now. Well, unless you're trying to lull me into a false sense of security and have a killed '42 summer offensive planned.
2/21/21, 1:50 PM - [Axis]: true
2/21/21, 1:51 PM - [Allied]: true? that you've lulled me into a false sense of security and are going to kill me in a summer '42 offensive?
2/21/21, 1:51 PM - [Axis]: no
2/21/21, 1:51 PM - [Axis]: the former
2/21/21, 1:52 PM - [Allied]: I have to say that you're the strongest axis player wrt/the Atlantic and North Africa that I've have ever faced.
2/21/21, 1:53 PM - [Allied]: My other opponents usually just destroy me in Russia and inflict minor pain in the Atlantic.
2/21/21, 1:54 PM - [Allied]: Though I did once have a superior opponent close the Med and destroy me in Russian ('42 Barbarossa).
2/21/21, 1:54 PM - [Axis]: Thanks for the compliment.
2/21/21, 1:55 PM - [Allied]: I could never figure out how the axis could win, or even be competitive in North Africa and the Med. You have definitely provided me with the blueprint for that!
2/21/21, 1:55 PM - [Allied]: Also, your oil management is incredible.
2/21/21, 1:56 PM - [Allied]: I personally think one of the flaws, exploits, or whatever one might call it, is how much oil the axis can stockpile.
2/21/21, 1:56 PM - [Axis]: u forced me to be frugal with your devastating strategic bombing
2/21/21, 1:56 PM - [Allied]: Even with the 3 Romanian oil knocked out for over a year or more you've done extremely well with the Euro-axis. If you have had them then oil would not have even been a consideration.
2/21/21, 1:58 PM - [Axis]: Italy and Germany must work together to strain Britain
2/21/21, 1:59 PM - [Axis]: Italy has to build the right stuff, and Germany must provide air power to the med
2/21/21, 2:02 PM - [Allied]: Not for competitive play but possibly for a more historical solo play I've been toying with a house rule that would limited the total number of saved oil to the number of oil points that a major power receives per year with a minimum of 1. Also, a major power wouldn't be forced to expend saved oil under this rule even if their saved oil exceeded this limit due to a drop in oil points through capture or trade changes.
2/21/21, 2:03 PM - [Allied]: Temporary losses through strategic bombing wouldn't reduce a country's limit but loss through partisans would.
2/21/21, 2:04 PM - [Axis]: Interesting. The stockpiling is a flaw in the rules
2/21/21, 2:06 PM - [Allied]: Certainty within the rules but historically flawed I believe is that countries such as Japan and Italy, which can't reach full production, can save oil points in the first years and then use that oil for production later with their production multiplier has increase.
2/21/21, 2:07 PM - [Allied]: Have you ever played without using the optional rule for saving oil?
2/21/21, 2:07 PM - [Axis]: Not in a long time...
2/21/21, 2:08 PM - [Allied]: Are you familiar with the latest versions of WiF (CE)?
2/21/21, 2:09 PM - [Axis]: No, haven't seen it
2/21/21, 2:09 PM - [Allied]: I actually bought it. Don't know when/if I'll every play it. The vassal module is pretty good.
2/21/21, 2:10 PM - [Allied]: But in CE the oil rules have been completely reworked.
2/21/21, 2:10 PM - [Allied]: Only saved oil can be used for reorg.
2/21/21, 2:10 PM - [Axis]: Really
2/21/21, 2:10 PM - [Allied]: Well that's not exact
2/21/21, 2:11 PM - [Allied]: All units at the end of the turn are flipped back.
2/21/21, 2:11 PM - [Allied]: Units that are railed are no longer flip.
2/21/21, 2:11 PM - [Allied]: You pay oil as you go.
2/21/21, 2:11 PM - [Axis]: Ahhhhhh
2/21/21, 2:12 PM - [Allied]: You can pay a fixed cost for a given impulse to move all your oil units.
2/21/21, 2:12 PM - [Axis]: Actions have a corresponding oil usage
2/21/21, 2:12 PM - [Allied]: Yes.
2/21/21, 2:12 PM - [Axis]: that's better
2/21/21, 2:12 PM - [Allied]: There's also a 0.1 optional rule where you can pay 0.1 oil to move or fight with each oil consuming unit.
2/21/21, 2:13 PM - [Axis]: Nice
2/21/21, 2:13 PM - [Allied]: Rail does flip, but doesn't cost oil to reorg
2/21/21, 2:13 PM - [Allied]: You can always move or fight with the first oil unit for free
2/21/21, 2:13 PM - [Allied]: Also, instead of O-chits there are O-points.
2/21/21, 2:14 PM - [Axis]: That is better and more realistic
2/21/21, 2:14 PM - [Allied]: Instead of a super-combine you could use O-points to basically conduct a land/naval impulse.
2/21/21, 2:14 PM - [Allied]: Of land/air
2/21/21, 2:14 PM - [Allied]: or naval/air
2/21/21, 2:14 PM - [Axis]: cool
2/21/21, 2:15 PM - [Allied]: Also, you can pay 1 o-point to conduct a land and move/fight with all your subs.
2/21/21, 2:15 PM - [Axis]: Axis won't be able to stockpile with those rules
2/21/21, 2:16 PM - [Allied]: Only saved oil can be used to run your units.
2/21/21, 2:17 PM - [Allied]: Oil not saved in your home country is halved. Oil used from a cooperating major power is also halved.
2/21/21, 2:17 PM - [Allied]: 1939 scenarios also start with a trade agreement between the US and Italy.
2/21/21, 2:18 PM - [Allied]: Both the US and Italy get extra CPs to handle this agreement.
2/21/21, 2:18 PM - [Axis]: interesting
2/21/21, 2:19 PM - [Allied]: Also, the CW can mine the Norwegian waters.
2/21/21, 2:20 PM - [Allied]: This can have a range of effects from Norway giving the Germans a number of RPs to them giving them to the Brtis
2/21/21, 2:20 PM - [Allied]: All this is added to give the Germans a possible greater incentive for invading and capturing Norway.
2/21/21, 2:21 PM - [Axis]: I have felt Norway is undervalued in MWIF
2/21/21, 2:23 PM - [Allied]: There's absolutely no valid reason from a gaming perspective that I see for the Germans to ever invade Norway. Gives the Brits a TRS and a boatload of CPs and ties up significant German forces at a time when they're need for Belgium and France.
2/21/21, 2:23 PM - [Axis]: agreed
2/21/21, 2:25 PM - [Allied]: Oh well, I've actually been pretty much finished with my impulse during my entire bloviating. Except for a few rebases that is.
2/21/21, 2:25 PM - [Allied]: <Media omitted>
2/21/21, 2:25 PM - [Axis]: no worries, I have enjoyed it
2/21/21, 2:25 PM - [Allied]: Probably a waste, but Gort is used to reorg 3 CPs. I'm 2 CP's short of full CW production at the moment.

2/21/21, 2:26 PM - [Axis]: Commonwealth can afford the oil
2/21/21, 2:26 PM - [Allied]: <Media omitted>
2/21/21, 2:27 PM - [Allied]: Also, Nimitz is used to reorg the P-35 and BB Arizona. Really the P-35 as a counter to possible port strike on Peral the IJN much attempt if the turn continues.
2/21/21, 2:28 PM - [Allied]: Though I'm not sure how effective a few squadrons of obsolete P-35s would be. But they'd better than nothing.

Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #13.

2/21/21, 2:33 PM - [Allied]: Turn 16. Mar/Apr 1942. Axis #13. Weather.
2/21/21, 2:33 PM - [Allied]: d10=10, Fine across the map.

2/21/21, 2:34 PM - [Axis]: wow

2/21/21, 2:36 PM - [Allied]: axis impulse 13
2/21/21, 2:38 PM - [Axis]: got it
2/21/21, 2:39 PM - [Allied]: Not really what I wanted. But so far this game it doesn't seem that I've gotten a lot that I've wanted. Though, I think we as humans have a tendency to focus on the bad luck more than our good luck.
2/21/21, 2:39 PM - [Axis]: We do, that's for sure
2/21/21, 2:40 PM - [Axis]: You would have seen a lot more action in Russia this past winter had I had more snow for the Finns
2/21/21, 2:40 PM - [Allied]: It's hard and I've had to remind myself several times this game that you can't control the dice or undo what has happened. You can only solve the problems presented to you.
2/21/21, 2:41 PM - [Axis]: Same here. MWIF has trained me in that regards. We are all dice whiners at heart. It's how we project the bad dice we get to the other opponent that separates the men from the boys...
2/21/21, 2:42 PM - [Allied]: Also, I try to keep an even keel and not tilt ...
2/21/21, 2:42 PM - [Allied]: That is, lash out through reckless low-odds attacks when things go wrong.
2/21/21, 2:43 PM - [Allied]: Though I'm not opposed to low-odds attack; but only when they make good risk/reward sense in the cool light of day.
2/21/21, 2:43 PM - [Axis]: Exactly...I've seen really good players destroyed by their handling of bad luck
2/21/21, 2:44 PM - [Allied]: Also, I try not to let a run of either good or bad luck influence future decisions where luck might be involved.
2/21/21, 2:45 PM - [Allied]: For example, those 2 painful turns where you sunk around a quarter of the CWs CPs and militated my convoys lines.
2/21/21, 2:45 PM - [Axis]: Yes..good point. I've seen players think their luck will continue so they make poor decisions
2/21/21, 2:46 PM - [Allied]: I try to reestablish them based on the best probabilities of them surviving.
2/21/21, 2:46 PM - [Allied]: Though you last impulse of the axis finding 4 times in a row in Cape St. Vincent really tested me ...
2/21/21, 2:47 PM - [Axis]: lol, I'm sure it did
2/21/21, 2:47 PM - [Allied]: One thing you do for me is to give me a lot to mull over while I'm doing my daily run.
2/21/21, 2:47 PM - [Allied]: I generally go from total despair to this might give me a fighting chance.
2/21/21, 2:48 PM - [Allied]: Though, I feel I'm about to be tested again in Russia and China.
2/21/21, 2:48 PM - [Allied]: And who knows where else this coming impulse.
2/21/21, 2:48 PM - [Axis]: Indeed you will be
2/21/21, 2:49 PM - [Allied]: And the turn is likely to end and you are likely to get to move first next turn.
2/21/21, 2:50 PM - [Allied]: It's not looking very good for the good guys.
