I'm going to start with a picture.

I feel like SC:WW1 could do with some fresh scenarios to further explore the nice mechanics it has. Clearly the "American War, USA v CSA", "1911 Anglo-German Alliance" and "1920 Polish-Soviet War" are leaders in that regard.

Now my idea would be to create a campaign on a fictitious invasion of Ethiopia by the Italians maybe around (1906/07). Though the Italians would have the superior training and especially equipment and industry, the terrain and supply situation would definitely favor the Ethiopian defenders. They would also have a higher mobility (mobility tech 1), adding to their home advantage.
Many great powers are present in the area. There are the French in Djibouti, the Ottomans in western Yemen and the UK with its subjects in eastern Yemen, british Somaliland, Sudan and Kenya. They dislike the Italian Invasion and through diplomatic events they may slowly move towards first supporting the Ethiopians economically and then potentially even entering the war on their side. This the Italians can try to avoid by investing some of their MPPs in diplomatic events to keep the large powers out of this war. Alternatively, the Italians may though declare war on the french for example, if they see an opportunity in moving through Djibouti to open up more roads to Addis Abbeba.
A british entrance into the war could spell disaster for the Italians, as the british naval dominance in the region could easily cut off first Italian convoys going through the Suez canal and then even the long route around africa. Without naval convoys from the mainland, a sizeable portion of Italian MPP would fall away, making the invasion even more difficult. A conflict with the French and especially the Ottomans may be something that can be dealt with, as their navies aren't as strong, though the French could bring some experienced foreign legionnaires to the battlefield to strengthen the ethiopian defences. On the other hand, a quick strike into Djibouti could cut off the rail connection from the french ports to the ethiopian capital and provide the Italians with a relatively well supplied route to their target.

What has been done so far? As you can see in the picture above, the landmass has been created. Also most terrain features have been inserted and ports, capitals, cities, towns, settlements placed. Roads and Railroads are also drawn.

Units and campaign details are in a very rough state. Research will be fixed, for balancing and setting reasons.

What is completely lacking are scripts, events, convoy routes. Currently I have no idea how to create those. If someone is interested in participating in the creation of this mod and maybe even knows how to create some of the former entities, please let me know.

In any case I will keep working on this mod and update this thread as soon as some singificant step has been completed.

Here another picture of the map, showing the Ethiopian core territory and capital. (Yes, Bolivia is serving as a stand-in for Ethiopia, as their flag looks similar and Ethiopia wasn't available for selection [:D]):

This way the picture of Ethiopia may be easier to view:

This looks very interesting, though rather than 1906/7 the immediate question that came to my mind, was why not 1896?

Tendraline -> RE: Italo-Abyssinian War 1.5 (non-historical) (1/16/2021 8:42:58 PM)

The map is decent except for the fact that none of the three powers had much control over the interior of the Horn of Africa, with resistance groups such as the Dervish movement and the Bimal tribe. There were also nearby sultanates that collaborated with the Italians.

Given a war, they could become a problem that could certainly block routes in the area.

Okay, thanks for the heads up. I will think about adding partisans to the area, I guess.
But I'm not yet there and still have to learn many editor mechanics.

That is something to consider, though I thought it might be better to keep it closer to WW1, to keep the technology gap as narrow as possible, while not crossing into the WW1 timespan. On top of that I don't have a lot of knowledge about that part of history and only limited time to work on this mod. Therefore I prefer to use some historical frame and then shape the rest to make for fun gameplay.

That makes perfect sense! [:)]
