You might want to keep Port Augusta, Sydney and Melbourne secure from a second invasion. Like Ranger Joe said above, it's good to have some forces on strategic movement ready to respond. To me, nothing north of Brisbane is crucial to hold.

Cheers,
CB

I deployed australian regiment in Port Augusta I hope that they will have no unexpected visitors.

21st-26th February 1942

Java

Batavia and Bandeong are still in Dutch hands. Airbases are operational and harrasing enemy troops with bombing missions. Rest of island is owned by Japan.

Sumatra

Eastern bases Sibolga and Padang are owned by Dutch. Two supply convoys were dispatched to help allied soldiers stationed there.

Burma

It’s clear that Japanese troops will try to bypass Rangoon. They moved from Pegu to the North and attacked Toungoo. British troops are no match to Japanese guard regiment and they are equal in strenght only on paper.

Seeing that there is big possibility of cutting off troops in Rangoon, part of British and Indian units will march north.

27th-28th February 1942

Burma

Japanese troops captured Tuangoo and moving north. Allied airforce will not intervene until enemy will move on open terrain north of this base.

In spite of this. No offensive moves against base by land forces.

At Perth at least 4 submarines detected. Intelligence claims that 20th Infantry Division is moving against Perth. It is known that they are on the ships so they might arrive soon. Additional Australian troops will be send there.

South Pacific

Once again Japanese carriers showed up near New Zealand. This time they bombed empty convoy but there was also P-40s squadron protecting convoy. 9 Zeros and 3 Vals were shot down. 4 P-40s didn’t returned to base.

If he over crowds airbases don't forget about night bombing to spread out his CAP to day and night and less for sweeps and escorting of his bombers. Japan has weak AAA so, unless he already bought some out from the HI and sent them to Burma you can bomb at lower altitude at night and increase your effectiveness, even with light bombers.

RangerJoe -> RE: Lost... As always. Runnersan (A)vs Deaniks (J). No Deaniks Please! :) (2/24/2021 4:52:55 PM)

Pull out of Rangoon, it is not worth losing units. You might want to consider putting at least one bomber unit on night city attack with the range to hit Rangoon right after its capture.

Consider moving the Burma base forces into southern China, they also have some AAA capability. Also consider moving the one Burmese AAA unit there as well. Move in AT units into China, fly them in if you have to. They should help blunt the Japanese armour attacks.

Consider putting just small battalions at the Burmese bases with air bases. When the Japanese move in, fly out the battalion. The Japanese will still lose a turn shifting to combat mode and will not be able to advance.

If you have not yet bought out the buyable Chinese units, do so and get them moving to India. With enough supplies there, they can take reinforcements and get rather large. You are better off using those to spearhead your moves out of India with support from Allied armour and artillery than using the Indian forces. You can also buy out the Chinese air units as well so they don't get destroyed on the ground. That is not as important now since the can fly faster over the mountains than your troops can move.

The only replacements for the Chinese infantry and cavalry units right now should be support squads. That will help their disabled squads repair and be more effective.

Move some Chinese units into blocking positions on the main roads and minor roads, let them dig in. Try for at least 2X defensive terrain but 3X is better. They will be tough to dislodge, taking Japanese time, casualties, and supplies to do so.

If Chinese units get trashed taking lots of destroyed devices, then consider dividing them and use those to cut supply lines. If you keep them in good defensive terrain, they have a better change against Japanese bombers.

Joe

PS Your AAR is easier to read than your opponents. I gave up on trying to read his AAR.

That's the plan. For now my pilots are training.

I will try with AT units. I used politcal points to buy 2 division from China but it will take some time until they will arrive. I'm afraid that I have to use my political points very cautious. I'm trying to get enough to buy US Infantry Division and ship it to Australia.

1st-6th March 1942

Burma

More support arrived to Port Blair. British and Indian troops are evacuating Rangoon. High sweep activity over Burma air bases.

Sumatra

Japanese decided to finish conquest of Sumatra. Unfortunately they synchronized with arrival of supply convoys to Padang and Sibolga. Transport AKL’s were sunk. Padang base was captured. Royal Navy just before Japanese detection decided to conduct naval patrol along western coast of Sumatra. British carrier with escort ships was send there. It will not save transports but with little luck will hit few Japanese attackers.

Australia Command

Allied bombers are attacking 21st Division moving north to Charters Towers. 7th Armored Tank Brigade captured important town on crossroads cutting off best supply line to 21st Division. British troops will try block other supply lines that might help Japanese.

Japanese troops invaded norther Australia. Broome captured. Supply convoys for Darwin and Broome in danger.

Big TF with Battleships detected. Big question is this long awaited invasion of Perth or maybe just carrier force raid. Light surface ship squadron that had orders to attack Broome transports will be withdrawn because air danger risk.

Two additional fighter squadrons were send to Perth to prepare CAP.

South Pacific

Operation Bridge

After conquest of New Caledonia biggest problem for Allied HQ is, how to safely transport troops and planes to invaded Australia. Obvious answer was through New Zealand and Perth. With incoming invasion of Perth, New Zealand route becomes primary route for allied transports. In february-march 1942 few convoys with troops arrived to Pago Pago concentration point. There, HQ decided to create chain of air bases to transport squadrons from Fiji to New Zealand.
Tongatapu and Raul Island were selected to this task and transport with construction and base forces were sent there. Additionally HQ sent, to Raul Island, one New Zealand infantry battalion to provide protection and avoid fate of Norfolk island where US base force was eliminated and island captured by small Japanese forces.

Rest of ships were divided into 5 transport Task Forces. One with squadron of P-40s to provide CAP for New Zealand. 3 TF’s with at least 7 squadrons of bombers and fighters. And another one with engineer and base force troops.

All ships were close to each other and were moving close to southern shores of New Zealand. Then they changed course to north, to Hobart. After one day, all TF’s were put on high alert. Enemy Carrier raid was detected. Loosing 7 squadrons of planes and troops was unacceptable for Allied HQ.

TF with land forces moved on full speed to Dunedin to start unloading there. From Wellington single ship was dispatched north to lure enemy east, as far from convoys as it was possible. Also in Wellington small supply convoy was preparing, so HQ ordered newly arrived P-40’s squadron to provided fighter cover.

Plane transport TF’s were in other situation. One with US Marine Fighter squadrons was close to Hobart, so fighter cover moved from Sydney was able to protect it. But far worst situation was for 2 other convoys in the middle of ocean between New Zealand and Tasmania. Full speed west. That was their orders.

Enemy didn’t catch decoy but moved close to New Zealand and attacked protected by P-40s supply convoy.
P-40’s were able to inflict minor losses, but at least 2 protected ships were sunk. Then IJN moved west. They catch in their range troop transports that were unloading in Dunedin. Fortunately most of the troops were already on land when bombers arrived and damaged or sunk most of the convoy ships.

That was crucial moment.
If Japanese commander decide to move west he will catch convoys with planes. If he will move northeast, allied forces will be safe.

Next day came and Carrier force was not detected. This could mean anything. Convoy Ships moved north to Australia along western coast of Tasmania. Next day… No carriers. First ships arrived to Australia.

This time Allies were lucky… Enemy was very close from great victory…

7th-15th March 1942

Australia Command

As was expected using her naval invasion superiority Imperial Japanese Navy prepared attacks on Port Hedland and Perth Region.
Port Hedland fall into enemies hands quickly, but Perth is not so easy to capture.
Supported by carriers enemy prepared sweep mission against Perth defenders. But IJN didn’t expected Marine dive bombers in base.
CA Kinguasa from transport escort TF was hit by three bombs and is on fire (heavy fires).
Also one transport was hit by bombs.

Allied HQ had big problems with identification where enemy will land. At first HQ believed that enemy will invade Perth directly, but on next day transport and support TF’s were seen moving towards Geralton, north of Perth. One australian infantry brigade was sent there to support base defenders, but on next day shocked air recon detected all TF’s to the south of Perth at Busselton. That is probably real invasion target. If enemy will use more than one division to invade region, there will be no force in western Australia to stop him.

Also IJN airplanes began attacks on Darwin. CAP created by US Army and Marines didn’t stopped enemy from bombing port. Submarine support infrastructure (AS ship) was destroyed. Fortunately air battles against Japan are no more one sided as it was before, many Zero planes were shot down. In total numbers losses were equal.

On eastern coast after lots of land maneuvers Japanese troops surrounded Bowen. Japanese 21st Division was divided into parts and blocked positions to the west and southwest of Bowen. 1st Tank regiment blocked road from Townsville. Allied forces will try to break through 1st Tank Regiment. 7th Armour Tank Brigade supported by Australian Infantry brigade and allied air force will try to open supply lines to Bowen.

16th-20th March 1942

Burma

Allied bombers bombed Burmese oil fields. Japan brought fighters in big hurry to protect precious oil.
Troops successfully moved north to Indian border, but there are lots of voices about staying longer in Burma. It is possible that Japan put all her effort into Australia and battle of Burma might be longer and might bring more casualties to Japan.

Java

Japanese troops made first deliberate attacks against Bandoeng. Both attacks were repulsed with heavy Japanese losses. Mechanized brigade from Batavia moved south towards empty Japanese bases on the east coast of Java because almost all units are blocking Bandoeng.

Australia Command – North

Allied transports made effort to get to Darwin with supplies. Enemies detected them and attacked with surface ships. 2 ships sunk and 2 ships arrived to Darwin.

Also air battle over Darwin is raging. It seems that IJN figther squadrons are weaker and need operational break. Unfortunately also allied squadrons are depleted.

Australia Command – West

Two divisions landed just south of Perth. Allied troops can muster 3 brigades in this zone and so they decided to weaken Perth defense and strengthen Kalgoorlie, crucial train depot that connects eastern and western Australia. There are lots of question in Allied HQ. To protect Kalgoorie or defend Perth at all cost and loose contact with eastern part of country?

In the same time they once again captured Emerlad, city west of Rockhampton. US Tank battalion will try to recapture this position.

Over Brisbane dozens of fighters were damaged or destroyed. Enemy is very aggressive in this zone with his sweep missions. Once again allied fighters were pulled back to Sydney.

South Pacific

Once again CV raid against trade routes between New Zealand and Tasmania. This time big convoy returning to New Zealand was captured. Allied fighters moved to Hobart to protect hidden there transports and surface fleet.
To add more, enemy also raids from Perth, so he is trying to get convoys from eastern and western side of Australia.
There is big tanker convoy and 3 large supply convoys on the way, so Allied HQ hopes that enemy will withdraw any time soon. Especially important is fuel convoy. Lack of fuel in Sydney and other eastern bases is serious.

Runnersan -> RE: Lost... As always. Runnersan (A)vs Deaniks (J). No Deaniks Please! :) (3/4/2021 5:01:26 AM)

Jus a quick note... I didn't expected that Japan has so many divisions :) But I forget that I'm playing Iron babes scenario, so in Australia I'm facing at least 9 divisions. Enemy landed at Port Augusta. I prepared there 2 US Regiments, one Australian, artillery and tank battalions. Base fallen in 3 days...

But enemy send more support to Australia soon. At PHI he have 3 more Divisions. Who knows what is wating for me at Sumatra or Java... Brr...

Burma

Japanese guard brigade captured Lashio. All forces move north except few base force that will join Allied troops in China.

Java

Bandoeng fights on. Dutch armored brigade from Batavia moved south and routed Japanese infantry battalion in Kalidjati. Dutch forces will continue their advance south.

Australia Command – North

Darwin air cover is depleted by constant sweeping attacks from Timor. Additional naval invasion allowed capture of Derby. Australian Cavalry Brigade is on the way to clear region.

Australia Command – West

Perth was partially evacuated. Two Japanese Divisions are storming city and after 3 day attack HQ expects that Perth will fall into enemy hands before end of the month. New Zealand armor battalion and Indian brigade were sent as reinforcements to Port Augusta. They diddn’t make on time.

Australia Command – East

Bowen is still holding. More enemy divisions landed. Base is besieged by 4 Japanese Divisions and artillery units. At least one more division surrounds countryside.

On 22th March 1942 Intelligence decrypted information that at least one Japanese unit was loaded on ship and it is moving towards Port Augusta. Japanese carrier group was detected few days earlier, but TF was moving suspiciously slow. Allied HQ expected that enemy will try to attack convoys unloading supplies in Adelaide. But when it didn’t happened all troops were put on alert. 2 US Brigades, artillery unit and tank Battalion from reserves were ordered to move to Port Augusta defended by single Australian Brigade. In Port Augusta heavy cruiser Astoria with escort of 3 DD’s was put on alert and sail away from port to hunt enemies carrier group.

All of this was futile.

On 24th March Astoria TF attacked Japanese convoys but it was destroyed by heavy Japanese naval task force. Even though two DD’s from supporting TF attacked carrier TF, enemy withdraw without scratch.
On the same day Port Augusta was invaded by two divisions.

Allied HQ moved all B-17’s bombers to support defense, but Carrier group providing air cover was hard as rock. Losses among 4E bombers were high and unfortunately enemy was not weakened enough.

On 27th March 1942 Port Augusta fallen and allied troops withdraw to the west (worst option).

Air battle was raging over Port Augusta. Japanese carrier fighter cover is depleted but also allied dive bombers and fighter squadrons.

If the enemy move south he will activate emergency reinforcements that will be used for counteroffensive in Burma. If he will move east there is not to enough land forces to hold him. Also if the Bowen fall Australia will be lost.

In New Zealand additional units are awaiting to move to Australia, but I afraid that they will meet returning carrier force. Or they will not return… Just resupply at newly captured Port Augusta.

Also convoy with planes, marines regiment, and US Army Division sailed away from San Francisco. Protected by US Navy Carriers. They must get to Australia.

29th March-1st April 1942

Australia Command East

Perth has fallen. All troops are retreating to Kalgoorie. Another convoy was intercepted by Japanese Carriers. This time with supplies and squadron of fighters

.
Australia Command Central

Enemy has withdraw all his naval assets from Port Augusta. Probably to the west (Perth Region). After successful sweeping mission against Port Augusta fighter cover, enemy withdraw his fighters also. Port Augusta port is damaged and B-17’s are closing airbase located in this base. Allied HQ will try to regroup land forces and prepare counterattack.

Naval TF will try to bombard enemy base to increase damage and disrupt Japanese fortification effort.

Darwin CAP exist no more. Lack of supplies in Darwin makes reinforcing and upgrading squadrons impossible. HQ will try to create alternative route for planes to reinforce this position.

March brought heavy air losses for both side, but biggest losses were among allied transport ships and 4E Bombers. Many fighter squadrons were decimated. I hope for little more force conserving April.

7th-12th April 1942

After end of March Air Bloodbath and fall of Bowen, more peaceful times started. In Australia Allied troops are preparing to attack Port Augusta. In western region of Australia enemy is clearing coast before attack at Kalgoorlie.

Near Fiji Japan invaded little island between Fiji and New Caledonia – Anatom. Allied Destroyers Task Force prepared to attack Japanese invasion force, but just day before attack, Naval Search planes detected and identified Japanese carrier Soryu. Instead DD’s, 3 submarines were send to region and this time SS Sailfish didn’t fail. Two torpedoes hit. But only one hit visibly damaged carrier.

British carrier group moving along Java coast is having problem with ship detection, no enemy was found. One last chance for Royal Navy will be 13th April, when TF will move close to strait that divides Sumatra and Java.

On 13th April peace will end, because once again Japanese Carrier group was detected near southern Australia heading towards Port Augusta or Melbourne. Fighter squadrons are on full Alert.

Where were the escorts for those sunk ships? You need to protect those APs for when they upgrade since they will be the ships carrying your assault troops.

Two good hits on the Soryu. [&o] That should send her to the body and fender shop for awhile.

Those Japanese carrier raids made me to plan strange ad hoc routes for ships and created big fuel problem in Australia. This was one of those TF's that run away from enemy end used almost all it's fuel so I moved escort away. And to be honest I didn't expected sub in this place.

Runnersan -> RE: Lost... As always. Runnersan (A)vs Deaniks (J). No Deaniks Please! :) (3/10/2021 8:43:36 PM)

13th-19th April 1942

Australia Command

No good news. Evacuation of northern Australia goes as planned, but once again Carriers moved to Port Augusta and unloaded more troops there, creating risk, that future offensive in that region will be impossible.

At first day of operation (13th April) enemy lunched sweeping raids against main fighter base at Adelaide inflicting huge losses on Allied planes. Naval bombers counter attack brought only more losses to allied side.

Allied HQ decided that fighter sweeping counterattack will be prepared at all cost and after reducing Japanese CAP more naval bombers will be brought to action.

Unfortunately weather over Port Augusta was poor, so only on 17th April allied squadrons commenced sweeping mission. This time losses were almost equal. Over 25 Zero fighters were shot down at a cost 20 allied fighters mostly USMC Wildcats. Also B-17 bombers once again bombed air base at Port Augusta, dealing losses among planes on runway. Allied HQ knew that there is big risk of Japanese naval counterattack and bombing Adelaide, so they decided to withdraw squadrons to safer airfields.

This decision was lucky for allied pilots. On next day enemy had 110 Zero fighters over Port Augusta. But also luck smiled to bomber crews. This CAP was not able to intercept B-17s raid so once again bombers bombed airbase almost without losses and destroyed few Nell naval bombers.

On 19th April enemy tried sweeping mission over Melbourne. There was almost no CAP, but Allied naval fleet is present at this port. If enemy decide to attack, he will have to move away from Port Augusta. Allied naval bombers are on alert, so they will try to counter this kind of action, and stronger CAP was prepared over Melbourne.

In worst case scenario enemy will not try to sweep and will put all of his fighters to CAP, then naval bombers attack will be decimated.

Java

British carriers attacked three different transport Task Forces. One attack met CAP and returend to carriers with big losses and without hit. Other attacks went smoothly and 4 small transport ships were sunk.

Fiji

Bomber raids against new bases between Fiji and New Caledonia brought more losses to Japan. One transport ship was sunk and other is heavy damaged.

Burma

Almost lack of activity, small pace of conquest brings one important question. Did Australia invasion took all resources available to IJA in Burma. Maybe it will be best option to prepare counterattack and ease pressure that is put on Australia?

RangerJoe -> RE: Lost... As always. Runnersan (A)vs Deaniks (J). No Deaniks Please! :) (3/10/2021 9:44:45 PM)

You need to list all of the "free" Japanese divisions and other important units, then see how many PPs he would have to buy any out from restriction, then list where each of those units are on the map. That might tell you what he has yet to show you.

Without tools I would be blind... But I prepared this little report about positions of enemy Divisions and regiments. I’m checking bigger units only.

As we can see Japan keeps in Burma region something around 3 Divisions wit additional regiment sized RTA Divisions. But I lost 2nd Division from my sight. It might be the force that landed at Port Augusta or it might go to Burma. They also might be used to finish off Java defenders...

Australia Command

After fierce air battles of last days 21st and 22th April were more peaceful. Enemy withdraw Carrier TF from attack position near Melbourne and decided not to attack port with strong CAP.

I’m toying with idea to attack IJN at Port Augusta with my surface fleets. Japanese carriers are protected by 2 surface TFs and strong escort with battleship. Allies have at Melbourne 3 light cruisers and 16 DD’s. In few days 2 heavy cruisers will be available after refit.

I’m not sure that even with full speed I will be able to get there in one day and risk might bring big losess without any gain.

23th-30th April 1942

Australia Command

Almost all Northern Forces are safely evacuated to Southern Australia. Enemy captured Townsville and he is trying to capture Charters Tower where Australian troops put some good fight.

Japanese paratroopers landed at Cloncurry but they were repulsed by local garrison.

Also enemy landed at Horn Island protecting Torres Strait but were massacred by Australian and Dutch defenders.

Lots of losses in air battle over Melbourne. On 29th April enemy sweep once again CAP over this important port and shot down almost 40 planes. Japanese losses were equally high.

Japanese Carrier force once again is trying to attack Melbourne port. Allied surface fleets will try to intercept them.

Allied soldiers recaptured Derby in North Australia. Next target – Broome.

Java
Northern Java is fighting. Enemy is not strong enough there. Yet.

Luzon
On 29th April 1942 last US forces surrendered on Luzon. Enemy finished campaign there and so two more divisions are ready to move to Australia.

Burma[

Commonwealth forces with Dutch and US help are preparing defensive positions.

Fiji

Japan is building up their forces at ring of island east from New Caledonia. US bombers are trying to slow down enemy but it is almost impossible with lack of planes.

US Navy raided one of this ports. 3 enemy sub chasers were sunk. No US losses.

End of month summary

April was continuation of March. Northern Australia has fallen and unfortunately at Port Augusta I didn’t managed to get air superiority. Lack of airframes is big problem for me and I don’t know how long I will be able to hold against enemy.

Maybe put something small but enticing in Clare between Adelaide and Port Augusta. See if he takes the bait . . . [:'(]

Some air unit fragments with old planes might work, you don't want to lose a full air unit . . .

I'm moving NZ small unit... Just in range of well known line:) There is no base between Adelaide and Port Augusta.

Btw it's funny that almost all Australia is in Japanese hands, but there is no reaction. Only when they move south of Brisbane people will notice that someone invaded Australia :)

That is interesting because my map has Clare which is two hexes away from both, right on the rail line. If is an AF base, no port at all since it is an inland base.

There is true in Your words :) But actually it's my mistake. I didn't check carefully what are changes to this scenario. So I was surprised when I saw all of this nice Guards Divisions and Regiments knocking to my doors.

But I have lots of fun in this game. I'm usually playing as Japan and I'm used to fighting lost war in 1943-1945 :)
