rook749 -> Rook749 vs Janushm -- Third Time is the Charm..... (1/24/2021 3:51:57 PM)

Now on my third PBEM. I will be playing against Janushm, who is new to the Admiral's Addition but has played the Original War in the Pacific and picked this up on sale over the holiday.

AS I did last time I will take any help I can get. Before we get started I would like to thank Janushmand all of the forum players who comment. The community makes this game what it is.

Many things in WITP-AE work differently than they did in WITP. I hope your opponent tries some of the small scenarios to get used to the new interface and richer player control of combat set-ups. I haven't played WITP but from other players who have, I understand AE offers a lot more on the land combat side.

EDIT: Of course help will be available to you, but you must be fairly specific about what you are seeking. [;)]

Now for the Game Settings and Rules ---

• Set All Facilities to Expand at Start OFF

House Rules
----------------

Japanese Specific

1. No hunting of the US CV’s for the first 2 turns. If KB stumbles on them, then so be it, but IJ will not deliberately hunt them.
2. Kwangtung command units cannot leave Korea/Manchukuo unless full PP’s are paid.
3. Royal Thai Army cannot leave Thailand
4. Japanese may not sail past Singapore to invade the west coast of Malaya while Singapore is British controlled.
5. Only Glen floatplanes on submarines (or Serians if subs arrived so equipped, ic I400’s).

Allied Specific
----------------

1. 1st turn
a. Allies can only move already formed TF’s, except off-map bases.
b. Allies can change aircraft orders, but not move them. The only exceptions are AVG and Soviet forces.
c. Chinese can do anything (not Hong Kong)
2. No allied non-Chinese LCU may enter China until 1944 and then only USA ENG and HQ.
a. Exceptions: Provided that the Allies control Burma, Thailand, Indo-China, and Luzon, the Allied non-Chinese LCU’s may then use Chinese bases provided that they are not operating with Chinese LCU’s present in the hex and the date is after 1 Jan 1945. If China is ever completely conquered, or Chungking is the only Chinese base controlled by the Allies, or the Chinese are down to only 2 cities, then these restrictions do not apply.
3. No Corsairs allowed on US CV’s until 1/44 except for air transport purposes.
4. HMS Implacable’s fighters must remain Seafires or Hellcats, as Corsairs were too big for it.

Both Sides
----------

1. No Naval Attack by Allied land-based 2E bombers under 1000’ until 6/42
2. 4E bombers: no rules
3. Landings only on the base or dot hexes.
4. Submarines may not make a naval landing on any opposed hex.
5. City Attack strategic bombing is not permitted until 7/1/42.
6. No strategic bombing in or out of China unless or until US or British troops are there as outlined and allowed above.
7. Gentlemen’s agreement not to bomb Chinese airfields for the sole purpose of destroying supply. This is a somewhat loose arrangement since airfields would be considered valid targets if the hex has opposing troops, or if intel detects large numbers of aircraft based there. THIS IS ONLY IN CHINA.
8. Only the IJ Kwantung Army Command units must pay full PP price to change commands. All other command changes can be worked as the player sees fit paying PP to cross national boundaries.
9. House Rules can be renegotiated at any time if either player feels they are not effective, or circumstances arise that warrant changing, adding, or deleting HR’s.
10. If a real commander wouldn’t do it, then don’t do it. If you think what you are about to do is gamey, ask yourself if a real commander would do it and let that guide your play

As Always Thanks BBFanboy. Janushm has been working on the game mechanics for the last month, the main reason I think he asked for the historical 1st Option was to simplify/reduce the chance of error to start the game off.

Let him know that if he wants help, he can do an AAR as well.

rook749 -> RE: Rook749 vs Janushm -- Third Time is the Charm..... (1/24/2021 4:20:14 PM)

Let's Talk Strategy ---

I will be ripping the basic plan for defense from Sardaukar's Plan as where I will fight to hold and where I will do a limited Sir Robin.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2564541&mpage=1&key=Newbies

** The Red Line is where I will fight to the death to hold.

** INDIA
We will fight a delaying action in Rangoon "B" falling back to the Red Line.
If possible, after we ensure we have sufficient forces to hold Ceylon "E" we will move to reinforce Port Blair -- "A".
If we lose Port Blair or can hold it will we will look to hold point "C" or "D".

** Austrialia
We will fight a delaying action in Port Moresby "1".
Forces will be rushed to hold Fiji and Pago Pago, once forces are en route or at these areas we will look to move to hold New Caledonia and Espiritu Santo --- "2" & "3".
We will then look to the Ellice Islands "4" or the Phoenix Islands.

BBfanboy -> RE: Rook749 vs Janushm -- Third Time is the Charm..... (1/24/2021 4:31:36 PM)

First piece of advice - between the USN Far East (or Far West) fleet, the British cruisers, Australian/NZ cruisers and the Dutch Fleet there are opportunities to ambush some of his advance. The reality is that the Japanese have to expand very rapidly and cannot cover all of it well. You must find out where KB and Mini-KB are, and learn when his Netties get an HQ that can supply them torps.

Avoid those three and use SIGINT and Ops Report info to figure out where there are thinly escorted TFs you can ambush. Lowpe's Allied AAR (Spanking Lowpe) is a master class in how to do this. They make the Sir Robin period so much more exciting and enjoyable, even if you lose some ships doing it.

rook749 -> RE: Rook749 vs Janushm -- Third Time is the Charm..... (1/24/2021 4:45:35 PM)

General Strategic Overview
----------------
Given I have no idea what Janshm tends to do or what his overall plan of attack, until I can determine his overall focus, China, India, Australia, hold the historic perimeter I am simply going to hold the areas as outlined above and try to preserve my CV’s as a force in being. Overall, I will try to build for a massive Oct of ’43 offensive via Burma, but this may or may not be what occurs.

China
----------------
Hold until relieved or dead. Use max stacking limits in bad terrain to hold as much of the industry and supplies for a long as possible. Air Transport as much supply to China as possible. This is one area vs. a real human I feel will be an issue as I expect to lose most if not all of China simply because I have no idea how to defend versus a concentrated offensive. My first move will be to attack Ichang and the forces near it before he can reinforce.

India
----------------
I will send the 18th UK to India to Hold Calcutta and be my "rail" reserve. All free Indian Brigade's not part of Burma's division at sea will go to Ceylon to delay/hold this area. All other units will rest, train, and hold the India/Burma border after detachments to hold the coast and internal security. After the Ceylon Infantry Brigades arrive, we can shift these forces to the other others, as noted in the general plan above.

Australia
----------------
Major effort to hold all Perth and the entire Eastern Coast. Horn Island will be left to hold with minimal (if any) reinforcements. Port Moresby will receive the two Infantry Battalions to complete the Brigade, supplies, and dig in.

Singapore
----------------
No new units will be committed, but single ship supply convoys will try and slip through at the start until losses are too high. All units will fall back and recombine in Singapore as fast as possible.

DEI
----------------
As many units as possible fall back to one or two points and hold for as long as possible. Need to look at a more detailed plan in this area.

Burma
----------------
Units that can recombine fall back to Rangoon to dig in and hold. Hold the Air over Rangoon as long as possible for single ship convoys and bring supply in and fuel out. Hold the road open to China as long as possible and then fall back to the India/Burma border and then hold here at all costs unless he lands behind India's lines.

Christmas Island or Penrhyn
----------------
This will become my middle base to route all convoys around as the convoy system gets rolling. It will also become a supply point to fuel the advance. It will feed Pago Pago and Suva as my forward bases. These islands need to be reinforced, forts build, and PBY's brought forward.

CV’s
----------------
Will be split into single ship task Forces and grouped and either cover the build-up in the South Pacific or cover the north's the Aleutian Islands.

Submarines
----------------
Will harass the DEI area and try to slow down the offensive in this area as much as possible. New Boats will begin operation off of Japan (just enough to keep him honest), and the rest head to the South/Southwest Pacific.

Don't go there. Bombers from Indochina as well as a lot of IJN surface Naval TFs.

Think, Borneo to Kendari to Ambon.

Everyone should listen to this advice, I was hoping the battle fleet was covering these and not where I went but alas this was not the case.

If that "E" TF leaving Hawaii has severely damaged ships, send them back. There are lots of IJN subs in the area, your ASW is not that good yet, and your air search is impaired from your losses.

11 & 12 December 1941 Executive Summary

The thundering heard from Manila went south on the 8th of December, a few ships went east so let's hope it holds the Mini-KB and allows for most of the forces to get away (so far so good). Landings being everywhere....

RangerJoe -- no, it's the xAPs and transports that will dip south and then to San Francisco. I love waypoints. We also have the PBY's on 70% Naval Search and 30% Rest. The B-17D's are set to 1000' 70% ASW and 30% rest.

The Battle of Legaspi ---

The MTBs from Hong Kong were moved to Manila and combined with the PT boats. On the way, the MTBs tried to interfere with the landings but to no effect (which is how PT/MTBs usually work). Looking at where his surface forces were and the fact the Mini-KB moved south to chase the thundering heard, all of the PT/MTBs were sent to deal with the landing at Legaspi.

Use all of your float planes on your damaged ships as well for Naval Search and ASW.

100% Agree. We are out in force hunting. While my ASW is poor without the'42 upgrades I am getting some XP and when I get the '42 Upgrades it will be a different story when I hunt the subs. It also prevents his sub from doing any real damage.
