You mean like This guy? [:D]

We had a squad leader in my company who went comatose when he slept. He aroused ire when he treated himself like a king by bringing a folding cot while everyone else slept on those inflatable [but always went flat during the night] "mattresses." Like the guy in Meatballs, we'd pick up his cot with him still in it and move him somewhere else. The most memorable was when he took him to the chow hall. One guy went ahead to warn everyone to be quiet, then we brought him in and gently set him down. Everyone went back to eating and talking and eventually Rip van Winkle opens his eyes, sits up and looks around with a stunned look on his face. [>:]

I remember sleeping near a tank gunnery range at Graf during night firing. After a couple of nights, you get used to it.

I have a story that I'll tell, that involves myself, to anyone who'll ask when and if we meet. Its too long for me to relate right now.

Everyone at Graf sleeps near a tank gunnery range since the impact area is surrounded with them. And, yes, it takes about a week to get used to it. I was permanent party at Graf for 4+ years and my parents visited for a few days one summer. At the time I lived off post just north of several infantry ranges, but you could still hear tanks and artillery if they were training. It's the sound of freedom! At least that's what we would tell visitors.

1982 was the quiet summer - that's when the tank ranges on the east side of the training area were closed for upgrade prior to fielding the M1 tank. The ranges were extended and fitting with thermal targets.

Everyone was at least once...lol.

It was one of the initiations. The main 'initiation was having the gun crew grab you (sleeping bag and all) and tape you to the howitzer muzzle and elevate. They would go back to sleep leaving you there until morning. The Captain would walk the gun line each morning to see who was taped to the tube. He'd say, "get him the $%^& down off there!" then walk off laughing.

To Uncivil Engineer, I was there (Graf & Hohenfels) several times 1981-85.
