He aroused ire when he treated himself like a king by bringing a folding cot while everyone else slept on those inflatable [but always went flat during the night] "mattresses." Like the guy in Meatballs, we'd pick up his cot with him still in it and move him somewhere else. The most memorable was when he took him to the chow hall. One guy went ahead to warn everyone to be quiet, then we brought him in and gently set him down. I remember sleeping near a tank gunnery range at Graf during night firing. After a couple of nights, you get used to it.

The main 'initiation was having the gun crew grab you (sleeping bag and all) and tape you to the howitzer muzzle and elevate. They would go back to sleep leaving you there until morning. The Captain would walk the gun line each morning to see who was taped to the tube. He'd say, "get him the $%^& down off there!" then walk off laughing.
