ORIGINAL: Dan1977 I remember sleeping near a tank gunnery range at Graf during night firing. After a couple of nights, you get used to it. Everyone at Graf sleeps near a tank gunnery range since the impact area is surrounded with them. And, yes, it takes about a week to get used to it. I was permanent party at Graf for 4+ years and my parents visited for a few days one summer. At the time I lived off post just north of several infantry ranges, but you could still hear tanks and artillery if they were training. It's the sound of freedom! At least that's what we would tell visitors. 1982 was the quiet summer - that's when the tank ranges on the east side of the training area were closed for upgrade prior to fielding the M1 tank. The ranges were extended and fitting with thermal targets.
