MrsWargamer -> Old war movies (1/26/2021 11:54:24 PM)

Just wanting to get a thread going listing the old and the maybe obscure.
I'm suggesting anything from 1970 and back.
I am not in a hurry to debate them against each other as much as to get up a list of ones you know of.

I'm going to lead off with 'The Battle of Coral Sea' (1959).
Found it on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cV6hddJ2M4

It's watchable, but the end of the film features the battle, and is it ever a groaner ;)
This was my first time enountering this film.
Worth watching as a period piece amusement. No history lesson here though.
I'm going to add other titles as I can pick them from my memory.

Enough said.

Lobster -> RE: Old war movies (1/27/2021 2:17:59 AM)

A handful:

Battle of the Bulge 1965. I found it quite bad.

The Longest Day
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056197/

In Harms Way

Oh and this one. How could I forget it. [8|]

Bridge Over the River Kwai
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050212/

There are a bunch more I can think of but I'd be here all night.

Like Run Silent Run Deep
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052151/

Sink the Bismark
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054310/?ref_=tt_sims_tt

The Desert Rats

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046889/?ref_=tt_sims_tti

Pursuit of the Graf Spee
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048990/?ref_=tt_sims_tt

There's one where they get caught in the desert with an M3 tank and Allied soldiers from three or four different countries and they find a well. The Germans want the well too. Can't recall the name of it. Drats.

Found it. [;)]

Sahara

Blond_Knight -> RE: Old war movies (1/27/2021 2:25:13 AM)

Decision before Dawn (1951)
Little combat but an interesting inside view of a crumbling Germany.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pEfCo5uZLM

Outside the scope but Im going to also suggest Conspiracy (2001) because its absolutely chilling.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266425/

Waterloo (1970)

A superb film with an excellent cast and wonderfully desriptive soundtrack (here is one example below)

... and of course

Battle of Britain (1969)

Another wonderful film, cast and and even better soundtrack than Waterloo. The music at the end still brings a tear to the eye and as for the Luftwaffe march - [&o]

Watched this one again recently
Ice Cold in Alex
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053935/

The Graf Spee film is a hard one to find online. Not impossible, but it shows what you know about scrounging.

I recall reading 30 seconds over Tokyo at age 13 during my first experience at an army cadet camp (god did I hate that camp experience).

Oh, how about Flyboys? Love the biplanes and triplanes.

Yeah I know, 2006. But the aircraft...the aircraft.

You mean like the Blue Max? If I remember the name correctly.

OldSarge -> RE: Old war movies (1/27/2021 8:47:16 PM)

Several of the movies I would bring up have already been mentioned. So, I 'll have to add one that isn't listed yet.

The Red Badge of Courage (1951) with Audie Murphy

The Red Badge of Courage (1974) with Richard Thomas

Fun fact: the battle scenes were rotoscoped and used as battle scenes in the animated version of "The Lord of the Rings".

DeepBlack -> RE: Old war movies (1/27/2021 10:10:23 PM)

Can someone help me to remember what movie this was?
It may not even be primarily a war movie but it had
a memorable war scene... A column was being strafed by
Japanese planes. Ground fire caused one of the planes
to make a forced landing near the column. Soon the
Japanese plane was surrounded by a distant crowd.
The Japanese pilot climbed out onto a wing and shot
himself while the crowd watched.

Sound familiar to anyone? I saw this sometime in the 70's
so it is at least that old. Don't remember anything else.

HeinzBaby -> RE: Old war movies (1/28/2021 8:57:31 AM)

'In Which we serve' Noel Coward
'The Cruel Sea' Jack Hawkins
'Play Dirty' Michael Caine
'To Late the Hero' Michael Caine

Red Badge of Courage (1951)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNLOXYY17PQ
With war hero Audie Murphy in the starring role it is an overlooked masterpiece.

Masada (1981)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY7L-vDuhhE

Peter O'Toole is great as the world weary Roman commander.

Cromwell (1970)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER6xGlAZjVs

Lots of ahistorical howlers, but Richard Harris is grand as Cromwell and Alec Guinness is uncanny as Charles I.

For Greater Glory (2012)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmGRbApQDp4

Viva Christo Rey!

Juarez (1939)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj2B-u74nek

Paul Muni's best performance as Mexican President Benito Juarez. Bette Davis is electric as Empress Carlotta.

I'm surprised I forgot about this one! Zulu (1964) with a very young Michael Caine

Zulu: Men of Harlech

RFalvo69 -> RE: Old war movies (1/29/2021 7:05:02 PM)

Come and See (1985)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkkJZweYaLI&ab_channel=%D0%9A%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%BD%D1%86%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%BD%22%D0%9C%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BC%22

An anti-war movie made in Russia during the cold war. Incredibly powerful but harrowing. The story of a young boy who joins the Russian partisans and lives through German atrocities and inhuman war conditions. The realism is still unparalleled (the director used real bullets - just saying!)

The best war (or should that be anti-war) movie ever made IMO.

Another good one in a similar setting:

Trial on the Road (1971)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067625/

https://sovietmoviesonline.com/drama/proverka-na-dorogah

It was made in 1971 but banned in the Soviet Union for 15 years.

Another good one - Liberation - actually a series of shorter films, made by the Soviets in 1970/71, covering their major East Front campaigns

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0198811/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqJEMXbRgdw

Cheers
