Is there a way to zoom in or out the map screen? I can't find any commands/key to do this, didn't see anything in the manual about zooming in or out...but in some YouTube videos it seems as if that was happening.

As far as I know there is no way to zoom in, the only way is to reduce the resolution of your game.

You were likely seeing the game center the screen when a new selection was made too far away from the map center.
Alternately, the video camera itself could have zoomed in.

Windows does have a magnify feature you can turn on to magnify what is under the cursor.
