RhinoDad -> Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 2:24:00 PM)

Now running latest official patch and find it chock full of memory leaks. Does the last beta patch solve some of these or is it also plagued by serious memory leaks?

Am I correct in that you can not run games in final on latest beta and visa versa

(No, I am not belittling the wonderful enhancements and bug fixes accomplished)

Lokasenna -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 3:03:28 PM)

I haven't experienced memory leaks (at least of a noticeable nature). Of course, this may depend on the OS you are running on.

Same OS as running old version but all the wonderful new features might be os allocation of system space which is not being cleared with destruction of process.

Old game version could run all day, 8+ turns, no memory leak noticed. New version only running 2 maybe 3 before serious, 5 - 15 sec, memory leak lag.

What OS are you running?

Sardaukar -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 3:15:40 PM)

I have never experienced memory leaks with WitP-AE with Win 7,8 and 10.

Lokasenna -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 3:16:00 PM)

Windows 10. I ran on Windows 7 before.

Are you watching the RAM usage creep up? I'm not sure what could affect this as I'm not sure exactly which language was used to create the game, but I'm wondering if one of the functions in one of the language libraries that the game uses may be a version on your machine that results in this?

btd64 -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 3:49:21 PM)

No problem on my end. No memory leaks....GP

RhinoDad -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 4:02:58 PM)

Running on an ancient Vista box, that OS did not always clear allocated system space with destruction of process; so memory leak. Or could be as you suggested, language library.

Was just wondering if latest beta had less memory leaks. Will be loading and playing some with latest beta patch and was looking for info.

Will probably just deal with it or send the box back to mothball and run on newer box or just install a newer operating system. Just can not stand Win 10 and try to avoid using anything running on it. Although I do have one when I can use nothing else.

Good to hear about 7 and 8 though I just jumped from Original AE + 1st patch to latest official version on same box. So perhaps it is more versions of OS than just Vista that will leak with latest official patch.

RangerJoe -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 4:30:12 PM)

Well, a lot of my memory leaked from my head to my torso - more specifically my abdomen.[:(]

As far as the game goes, no serious problems although if it runs too long the graphics can mess up. Just exit and reload.

Me too with a short layover in my stomach! [:D]

Thank you, got it handled just was curious on latest beta patch.

RangerJoe -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 4:40:04 PM)

Well, when I was having an ultrasound done, I asked the Tech "Is it a boy or a girl?" She, obviously pregnant, giggled and said "A kidney stone!"

witpqs -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 5:24:31 PM)

The latest "Beta" is really the latest official patch release, just named a Beta. It has lots of fixes in addition to various improvements, the patch notes should help catalogue those. I put Beta in quotation marks because it's not a Beta in the usual use of the term.

I play PBM, so it's one turn per time running the game. When I played AI, yes I would have to exit and re-load some times. I finally just did so each turn just as a discipline to avoid issues.

Not sure what it is called but one was labeled official and ended in "a" (1.26a) other said beta and ended in "b" (1.26b). So I was calling it "beta" probably incorrectly. It looked like someone did a lot of work on the "b" one and was going to give it a go after playing the "a" one a bit.

Coming off of first patch from original 1.26a has much to be absorbed. Was too excited to give it a whirl to read instructions on "b" so went the fast easy way and just loaded "a" to begin.

Thought I read that 1.26b saves were not fully compatible with 1.26a. As am really liking the "a" game thought I would play it more before starting another "b" game. With the game being something of a commitment and way of life tend to only have one game going at a time.

I just reboot after two turns maybe 3, if it is not lagging badly.

RangerJoe -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 5:40:08 PM)

They are backward compatible but not necessarily forward compatible.

RhinoDad -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 5:41:07 PM)

So you can load 1.26b and use save game from 1.26a?

You can install 1.26b and use the save game from 1.26a.

Nomad -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 5:46:53 PM)

If you are playing against the AI, changing versions is no problem, I think you might get an error message, just answer yes and things will be fine.
In a PBEM game, you should not be changing versions without coordinating with your opponent.

As a note, I do seem to remember that playing against the AI I had to save and exit the program every few turns or I would have delays
start giving me problems. This was using Windows 7 and 10. In a PBEM you usually do not have that problem since you are starting the program every turn.

The last official version was updated from 1124 to 1126a which included almost all the changes in the "Beta" 1126b. That is why witpqs says it is not a Beta in the usual sense - it is as stable as the Official patch.

I see no reason why the Beta install could not use a game saved from 1125a. The game versions mostly affect features of the game engine. If there are differences in the database, when you start the game using a different patch it will just ask if you want to accept the changes (without telling you what they are).

Kull -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/29/2021 10:10:14 PM)

There is no difference between 11.26a and 11.26b. The Beta exists for one reason and one reason only, to add "degree of difficulty" to the installation process.

For the reason that running different versions is practically guaranteed to generate the synch bug.

I go further and view 11.26a to not be worthwhile. What it "fixes" is relatively minor and it introduces difficulties which are much more widespread and game challenging.

AE patches do not address memory leaks.

Alfred

Edit: Vista is not a good OS to run AE on.

Yes I just meant that they are called Beta, but in the usual sense they are not really that; they are tested (certainly by now) as much as any full release.

Most likely the cause of your problem. I've never had any such trouble, and I run an ancient Win7 box. Although it was a 'beast' back in the day.

What switches do you have in your short cut?

Yaab -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/30/2021 5:55:15 AM)

I have always had memory leaks wih WITP:AE on Windows 10.

I start the game, input orders and run a turn.

After the turn is resolved, the memory leaks happen every time. The map scrolling slows to a crawl ( I have all the switches). I save my game, exit the game, reload the game and voila - everything is smooth again.

On PBEMs or against the AI? I don't remember that happening very often. As Japanese, Allied or both?

Yaab -> RE: Memory Leaks (1/30/2021 11:06:14 AM)

As Allies against the Jap AI.

It is not a problem, since I mostly do one turn a day.

Archive. Was asking because memory leak much larger and noticeable with upgrade from Original + first patch to 1.26a with no other changes.

With mine everything is fine until second one day turn then every object you click on gives you time to pour a cup of tea before resolving. So I just reboot as well.

Asked in post because was just wondering if memory leaks were common with game, especially after upgrades.

Thank you for your responses.
