WraithMagus -> Interceptor experience (2/3/2021 8:36:03 PM)

I noticed playing Allies in 1939 that the Siegfried Line is undefended by air cover, so, lacking anything to really do with France until Germany was done digesting Poland and Denmark, I sent my bombers to attack the under-defended units there in the snow. No damage was incurred on either side, but I did notice my air crews gain combat experience. I figured this was good enough, and just continued while targeting some of the German positions that were close to Belgium and had air cover, which resulted mostly in RAF and Luftwaffe interceptors duking it out slightly in favor of the RAF, and I figured this was good enough and kept it up.

The thing is, it doesn't look like the air superiority units gain experience from participating in combat as escorts to bombers. I have 55% experience bombers at this point, but still have 50% experience fighters. I can't check on the German side, but I suspect it's similar.

If so, I suspect this might be a programming oversight. Since you can't give a "just go fly over there and shoot down anyone who flies up near you" order to air superiority units, it seems like this cripples exp gain for air units that are being used as intended.

Good finding. If confirmed, this may be a bug. [:)]

If air sups have no one to fight why would they gain experience?

That was the case in some of the earlier attacks, but later battles were clearly battles between superiority aircraft. I have a screenshot of my combat log saying the following:
quote:

Allies Attacking
Air to Air Combat
11th Grp. Ftr: 2
II Jagdkorps: 3

Air to Air Combat
No. 3 Bmbr: 1
II Jagdkorps: 2

Land Air Strike
No. 3 Bmbr: 0

Defender Losses
Land Forces: 0

That's definitely air-to-air combat taking place, and quite a few air units shot down.

It's a chance you gain experience. it isn't always certain. The lower XP you are the easier it is to gain

Going back and playing some more, I did have one of my fighter units gain experience, however if these are even odds, I have very skewed luck, as I gained my first percentage of XP for any fighter unit at the same time that I have one of the bombers it was escorting hitting 56%, and the others are 54% and 55%. It seems more likely that fighters have a lower chance of gaining XP.

As an odd sidenote, my battleship groups have been gaining XP from being in the same fleet as carriers that are attacking land targets. (It also lowers their effectiveness as much as being in a naval engagement, as well.)

Keep in mind...fighters do not participate as "escorts" unless the bombers are intercepted.
You can tell since they still have the same operation points left if the bombers are not intercepted.
Your statement was the line was not being protected by air so you bombed.

You could just bomb the line with your fighters. I suspect that could get them experience. Would have to test that though

I tried that only a couple times, as I noticed even trying to stay out of range, I was getting intercepted pretty often. I was, as mentioned above, definitely having combat take place, I just kept going with it deliberately getting intercepted because I was shooting down more Luftwaffe than I lost in RAF.

It does gain experience to bomb with your fighters, but it also is a pretty massive waste as they are basically incapable of dealing damage and can and will get shot down by even land forces. Maybe they deal the same amount of effectiveness damage, but I can't measure that, and besides, it's generally a bad idea to have my own interceptors lose all their effectiveness % when there are enemy aircraft in range.
