This is a good video and shows how Spruance’s decision to launch uncoordinated air strikes possibly ended up in being a large part of the US victory.

Yes, decent sources but mainly tertiary ones. As one moves from primary sources one sees more creativity with the historical facts. But he did a good job piecing it together and presenting a narrative that follows the primary source material/facts that are/were available.

Do not recall it being covered but will watch again to see if he covers the flight to nowhere from the USS Hornet. Or the Hornets actions in the key part of the battle.

Thanks again for the post. It has been a long time since I have seen these; was nice to be reminded of them.

Hi all,

It does cover the Hornet's "Flight to nowhere"...

Yes, did a good job not buying into Mitscher's CYA. Would have been nice to have more of the mutiny of almost the entire flight to nowhere besides the Torpedo squadron. But then that would have little effect on the battle itself. Or that Mitscher launched against orders to different coordinates and seemed to tell no one except the flight leader.

Also that the air attack from Spruance was not coordinated but that was of plan. It was not an attempt to coordinate but failed.
