The Japanese submarine Soryu has collided with a Hong-Kong registered merchant ship.

Three of the submarine's crew sustained minor injuries in the crash which occurred on Monday, government officials said.

The Soryu submarine suffered damage to its antenna mast along with its communication equipment forcing the crew to use a mobile phone to report the incident.

The Soryu is a diesel-electric submarine that has been in service since 2009.

The 84-metre (275ft) long submarine was still able to continue sailing as the damage was not major, officials said.

Bradley Martin, a former US navy captain disputed the claims. He told CNN: "I wouldn't call the damage 'minor'. The submarine can't dive and can't communicate."

Soryu seems to be an ill-fated name. At least she'll make home port this time---if they don't pick up any other dents on the way.

Well, at least it is not just the US Navy having problems in that area . . .

But at least they don't have to use bed sheets to move nor have the crewmen topside opening their coats to move the ship - that actually happened in the US Navy!

Edit: Ah, a commercial vessel registered in Hong Kong! Maybe it will be turned into a Q-Ship!

I can understand a sub colliding with a tanker, but two DDs in the USN doing it within months of each other?

We are ****ed.

I wonder who their cell provider is? Good reception out there in the Pacific!

Is her captain's name Nagumo? Because that would be a double helping of irony.

A side question [I know, I could Google it, but here is a chance for a modern navy fan to shine]: What is the official title of the modern day Japanese navy? I don't know if it is still called the IJN, but as Japan still has an emperor the title Imperial could still apply.

They still hang on to that rising sun flag as their naval ensign though. I imagine that raises a few eyebrows in neighboring Asian nations.

I think they abandoned that last year, because it was an irritant to relations with Korea and China. I can't recall any more than that from the short article I read.

But the flag is right there front and center on the Soryu in the various photos from the BBC article from one day ago.

They said they were going to retire it - I suppose they have not worked up a suitable replacement yet. What signifies modern Japan these days, besides bent diving planes?

The JMSDF also uses the IJN's "Warship March" as its official march.

Interesting. It was initially outlawed by the U.S. occupation forces, but I guess it was too nice a piece of music to suppress forever.

How about a Japanese "Ship Girl"?
