p1t1o -> [Logged] Ship/Fleet fuel consumption and UNREP (2/13/2021 1:51:47 AM)

There appears to be a disconnect between the fuel consumptions of some ships - or is this WAD?

For example:
L 12 Ocean (DB#2639) carries 1500tons of diesel fuel and uses 89kg/min at Full (17kts), giving a range of ~4800nm.
R 08 Queen Elizabeth (DB#1008) carries 30tons of diesel fuel and uses 1.89kg/min at Full (25kts), giving a range of ~6600nm

D 650 Aquitaine [FREMM ASW] (DB#2794) carries 20tons of diesel fuel and uses 1.89kg/min at Full (25kts), giving a range of ~4400nm
F 230 Norfolk (DB#2792) carries 800tons of diesel fuel and uses 55.21kg/min at Full (25kts), giving a range of ~6000nm

So the ranges are ok but fleet fuel consumption can be hard to predict and can vary wildly.

On top of that, Fleet Oilers have very limited use when they can carry only around a few hundred tons of the diesel fuel needed and need half of that for themselves. Many carry huge amounts (10-20000tons) of fuels other than diesel, and I have not yet found a ship which uses them.

Eg:
A 110 Orangeleaf (DB#2580), cargo:
Diesel fuel - 123tons
Aviation fuel - 26tons
Gas fuel - 20000tons

A268 Green Rover (DB#333), cargo:
Diesel fuel - 123tons
Oil Fuel - 13000tons

Right now I am building a scenario with an 1100nm fleet traverse, under attack.
600nm in and after UNREPing to replenish ammo after missile attacks - my fleet is fine for fuel, except both oilers are dry and dead in the water after topping up the tanks of the receiver during every UNREP, due to the disconnect between fuel cargos and consumption between various ships.

This is linked to a feature request for more control over UNREPs and user-editable oiler cargo.

Thanks,
P

Hi p1t1o,

There's certainly a lot of room for improvement in the DB fuel values; it is *very* hard to get precise (or even imprecise) numbers from open sources.

That said, that some oilers carry fuels they don't use for their own engines is by design; it is quite common in the real world to have a tanker that runs on diesel transporting oil, for example.

For the consumption values, there are definitely some bad values in the DB on that front. We'll be taking a close look at fuel values for the databases in the near future, stay tuned [:)]

Reading the OP, it seems the oiler fuel issue he is highlighting is that the two ships he showed only have a measly 123 tons of diesel. In addition to the other fuel they carry, they should have far more than just 123 tons of diesel.

Whether the numbers are accurate or not doesnt bother me, nor that oilers carry different fuels.

Its almost as if there are two ship fuel consumption schema being used - a low consumption (1-50kg/min) with 10-200ton fuel tanks, and a high consumption (50-500kg/min) with 500-10000ton fuel tanks. These two schemes work perfectly well on individual ships - as shown in the OP - but when ships are connected to each other by way of needing to share the fuel on a tanker, severe mismatches occur.

I have since found an oiler to use for the scenario I am currently working on, but it took a long time digging through the ship list looking for one that carried enough of the right fuel.

It would make sense if we could have some control over what oilers carry (and over what is transferred during an UNREP) and would go a long way to relieving the problem as I imagine there are a great many fuel figures that would need to be looked at to perfect the full database.

But as Rory said, if the DB values can be given a quality control pass, that would be great and directly confront the issue.

Thanks,
P
