Luckily (or unluckily, as you like), this was caught on a video that I uploaded for my channel:

I click move into the enemy, switch to range attack, select my artillery unit, but I still get ambushed.
GuardsmanGary -- an extremely knowledgeable person from my comment section -- had this to say:

A very strange bug that I've managed to replicate. He was on move mode first and only switched to ranged attack mode in the combat box, then after he clicked to confirm the ranged attack he (accidentally I am guessing) clicked on a different hex. For some reason this makes the battle into an ambush even if you have intel on the hex and are conducting a ranged attack.
