TheOldie -> Horse and Musket Volume 1 discontinued. Nowhere else to get it? (2/19/2021 1:38:55 AM)

I was considering buying Horse and Musket: Volume 1, having seen it on the Matrix store just over a month ago (it was on sale, and I really should have just bought it then). I checked this past week and the store page now says it has been "discontinued" and it cannot be purchased. I have not been able to find the game for sale anywhere else, neither physical nor digital copies. I emailed Matrix support, and their respondent effectively told me "It's not for sale anymore, we don't know why, and it's not coming back."

Am I just SoL? I was interesting in getting this because of the scenarios it had, which included Hohenfriedberg (a battle I have not been able to find in any other program). Is there really no way to ever get Horse and Musket now?

There is a predecessor to the game called "Dragoon: the Complete Battles of Frederick the Great" available on one of the old games/ abandonware sites. Other than playing windowed I didn't see any difference between it and the screenshots I've seen of horse and musket. You should be able to find a working download with a google search.

Edit: Just downloaded and extracted a zip of the game files, clicked the dragoon application file and it runs fine. Hohenfriedberg is there, I started the first turn and remembered there are a lot of phases per turn. Play is fairly intuitive and similar to other Boku games, though the dev was under a different name at the time.

I guess I could, but the originals seem really buggy on modern systems. Horse and Musket Volume 1 at least seemed like it was adapted to work on modern systems at decent speeds. If only it could be found somewhere

This saddens me, the game is only from 2009/2010, works fine on modern systems ( using W10 64 bit and no issues)and its a great game with unique command rules and combat rules. ( I mean what other similar tactical games gives you an increasing charge bonus with cavalry the longer distance you charge, with of course a greater change to lose order!!..)

I can see discontinuing the physical CD but why the digital d/l? Perhaps (crosses appendages) the developer is ooming back with a newer game engine and continuing the series? Still doenst make sense to discontinue sales of the the old one though...

I would hope this is the case. Old versions of the more popular wargames get discontinued when a new version is coming out. But that seems very unlikely for Horse and Musket unfortunately. The developer seems to not exist anymore, and the marketing for this game was almost non-existent. The number of YouTube videos showing it is only about four or five at most. My guess is the license expired and Matrix doesn't care enough to go through the work to get it back on the store, seeing that it couldn't have sold well

Thanks. Looks nice, but it doesn't have any Austrian Succession scenarios :( Still might have to give it a try.
