WEXF -> Signal Intelligence Screen (3/10/2021 5:41:50 PM)

In a pbm game I received a line message in my Signal Intelligence Screen that reads:
"1st VM Division is located at Hanoi."
What I am wondering is this:
I have just been through a thread of forum posts on the 4 VM units that are activated when the Allies invade Thailand. As part of that thread I was, with the help of my pbm partner, looking at those units over and over again. He was visiting Hanoi and sending me screenshots of the 1st VM Division.
Is that activity what generated the signal intel mission? That unit is static and extremely obscure so the probability that a message about it would show up seems very low.
Thoughts?

VM units appear when you invade Indochina, not in Thailand.

They are Vietminh (thus abbreviation VM), who later gave French bloody nose in Dien Bien Phu..

You get random items there but if you keep track of them, they become very useful.

Thanks for the corrections on the details but can anyone answer the question I asked?
All I want to know is whether the fact that my pbm opponent clicked on the unit in Hanoi increased the likelihood of it showing up in the signal intel? That is- made it more than a random occurrence.

Because he clicked unit is to give orders -> radio traffic -> change of SigInt interception.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have a related question. How effective is sigint in a PBEM game? I know it works pretty well against the AI but how about against a human? I imagine a human opponent could give all sorts of units fake objectives to throw off sigint?

Its certainly possible , i prepped most of my units for Australia , gave target hex as Perth for my invasion forces and used waypoint to get invasion force near India. Caught my opponent by total surprise and made the campaign real easy in the first couple months

Not a hijack from my perspective. It helps with the discussion.
Here is the signal report that I mentioned.
There are 3 types of reports.
I think the ones that report a unit at a specific location are accurate.
I think the ones that say "transmissions" have been picked up at ... are also accurate but don't tell you the unit.
I think the ones that say a unit is preparing for an invasion is accurate in that the unit has been set to train for that location.
There are other I have seen that say a unit is on a certain ship. I think those are also accurate.
But I could be wrong.

You can track the radio transmissions from a task force and an astute Japanese player will do so. That has happened on a few occasions, to the dismay of the Allied player when the KB came for a visit!

Then again, a smart Allied player will know that the Japanese player know that their codes are broken unlike the Japanese in real life. Then the Japanese will use the intelligence screen to try and send wrong signals to the enemy. Even the AI may do so, after all, will the CEA actually try to attack Auckland?

Did you have units prepping for the India invasion as well, or did you go in with zero prep to throw off your opponent?

Yeah, that is one of my favorites.[;)]

Zero prep is practically modus operandi for Japan until April 1, 42 when the amphibious bonus expires and lack of prep starts taking much heftier toll on landing forces. Things like that become much harder later in the war.

Essentially, late Japan has to live with the assumption that Allies would know the composition of forces on every Japanese base unless Japan shuffles them continuously (which spends fuel on transports). You have to have hefty mobile reserve nearby or resort to samurai spirit of glorifying the inevitable death. In the Pacific the latter is usually the case.

spence -> RE: Signal Intelligence Screen (3/11/2021 2:46:37 AM)

Having experienced the "largess" of the Japanese "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" for a bit the Viet Minh were quite content to let the US OAS support them with weapons, etc. Their quarrel was with their colonial masters in France but they found their Japanese masters to no better (or worse) than the French and they needed to get rid of the Japanese first.

Although I know there will be no further changes to WitP:AE it sorta irks me that the Japanese garrison requirements for all of French Indo-China are non-existent although the French had a large FRENCH garrison there and by 1945 when France had been mostly liberated by the Americans and the Japanese were clearly losing the war the Japanese get an additional 4 divisions of troops to resist a Chinese invasion even though it is Japanese strategy to eliminate the Chinese from the whole war
.

That is not true.
