OpT1mUs -> Corps and weak zone of control (3/23/2021 3:28:05 AM)

Hi, just got the game. Reading through manual at the moment while also fiddling in game.

I've noticed that in game Corps have "weak zone of control" but the manual says:

quote:

Most land units exert a zone of control hindering
enemy movement in adjacent hexes. To determine
the extent of the zone of control exerted, all units
are assigned a category:

§ Front Line Units are Division; Corps; Army;
Mechanized; Special Forces; Paratroops; Cavalry
Division; Cavalry Corps; Pillbox; Coastal Gun;
Anti-Tank; Light Tanks; Tanks; Heavy Tanks,
Subs, and all surface combat vessels apart from
Carriers and Escort Carriers.

§ Support Units are all remaining land units apart
from HQs and Rockets.
§ No Zone of Control Units are HQs, Rockets and
all air units.
§ Damaged Units: units below strength 5 do not
exert any Zone of Control.

One Front line unit will exert a Zone of Control, and
this means that all enemy units moving into, or
within, one hex of it will have to pay an extra Action
Point to do so, while it will require two Support
units to have the same effect.

So is the manual outdated? When was this change made? Are there any other important discrepancies between the game and the manual? Thanks

I've also noticed manual mentions that in the main campaign, maximum unit experience is 3. I figured those little nation symbols blow the unit name represent experience. My units have 5 of those (I'm guessing they can only get "filled" to 3), while enemy units have 5 symbols and then 2 extra as well, for a total of 7. What do those extra 2 represent?

Yes, the manual is wrong- it hasn't been updated as the game has evolved through the 20 or so patches. There is quite a backlog of discrepancies at the moment, and no obvious place to learn about them.

There's been some discussion about there being an 'official' errata document or updated rules summary but it's never appeared.

The extra experience points will be if you are playing the AI as it can be set via the difficulty levels to have more experience.

This can be fine tuned, e.g. the highest difficulty level defaults to giving the AI extra experience, but you can reduce that bonus while still playing at that difficulty level.

There are version notes that list all the changes that have been made since release. Hopefully we'll be able to update the Manual or provide a condensed list of rule changes at some point.

Where are those version notes?

If you go into your main game directory you'll find a text document titled VERSION CHANGES. All the changes and fixes in each patch number are listed in outline form. Usually along with the forum name of whoever called out the game error or suggested the change.

Cool thanks, somebody already suggested it on Steam forums, exactly what I was looking for

IMHO the SC manuals could be better organized and written, but I'm an editor and technical writer by trade (and a former attorney, if it wasn't bad enough) so everything I read irritates me to some extent. Don't get me started on incorrect apostrophe use.

The reason I mention all that is because I would be willing to take a stab at updating the rule books with a little assistance. I'd need some help assembling the list of changes/corrections, and somebody with super-expert familiarity with the rules and their intent -- to make sure any stylistic changes improve clarity, not detract from it. And a few draft readers who won't hesitate to politely hurt my feelings.

I sincerely hope you won't have found any examples of that in the Manual, as they bug me too! [;)]

The Version Notes are the place to start, though I have already done some work on this. I'll try to get this completed in the near future.

To be honest the work in fixing bugs and making campaign improvements to all our games is a major factor in why the Manual hasn't been updated for a while. With three active games and lots of feedback it is very time consuming working on them all, and the situation is very different from (say) ten years ago when we could mainly work on new material and just dip in occasionally to update the pre-existing games.

Suggestions on writing and organising the Manual in a better way are welcome. While rewriting any of the current Manuals is very unlikely, as we hopefully release more games in the future they will also have their own Manuals and if we can make them better then that'll be a win-win for everyone.
