hansatuofd -> Game fails on load (3/25/2021 5:48:39 PM)

So I can run the launcher but when I start the game either from launcher or direct from app it briefly shows a window that is all white and then that closes/disappears, no error message.

I've checked Windows Media, setting is correct.
I've follow the compatability instruction you provide in thread 'If the game crashes on launch PLEASE READ THIS'.
Finally, I've note that my display settings recommend 150%, I've tried at both 100% and 150%

The failure is always the same, a window appears that is all white that then disappears, no error message.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 5:50:30 PM)

Can you post a DxDiag please?

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 5:59:08 PM)

Here is my dxdiag file

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:04:41 PM)

Thanks, just to be clear from your initial post, you did manually try changing your system DPI as well to 100% and no change?

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:09:46 PM)

My computer actually shows 150% as recommended, ... but I've tried both.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:13:47 PM)

Please try to disable all background programs in case these are interfering with the normal running of the game.

You can do this by running msconfig and disabling all non-windows start-up programs and services.
Then once you have disabled all non-Microsoft services, please run the game and see if the issue persists.

If it does not, please then reopen msconfig and reenable those services, one by one, until you find the program causing the problem.

A tutorial on how to do this can be found below:

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:26:34 PM)

Disable all I could (see attached). The white window hangs longer, sometimes reports "not responding" at the top but still just disappears eventually.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:39:06 PM)

Ok, let's try this once:

1. Uninstall WITE2
2. Delete the installer you downloaded, re-download a fresh copy from the Members Area / My Page on our site.
3. Reinstall WITE2.
4. Before launching the game, re-check the settings for the exe per this thread: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4987629

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:46:37 PM)

Did you install the game on your C or G drive? Your G seems to be an external drive with FAT32 which could potentially cause issues in some cases.

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 6:52:59 PM)

Game is installed in c:\matrix. G is a google drive file stream and is not used by the game ... FYI, WitE and WitPAE both ran OK on this laptop.

VPaulus -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 7:05:51 PM)

Open the game installation folder and find a file named "WarInTheEast2.exe". Right Click over that file and select "Properties" from the drop down menu.
Click in the button named "Change high DPI settings".
Tick off all the boxes there.
Click on "OK".
Click "Apply" and "OK" again.

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 8:26:52 PM)

All buttons off, no change. still a white window, displays briefly then disappears.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 8:34:15 PM)

I'm a bit baffled at this point to be honest. I've asked our support and the dev team for further advice on what to try.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 8:40:21 PM)

Ok, a couple more questions:

1. Have you tried temporarily disabling any anti-virus/security software? I assume that would have been covered above, but just in case it's somehow intercepting the game. We've seen some truly weird issues due to this type of software in the past.

2. If you check your Windows Event Viewer, is anything relating to WITE2 listed in the Application logs? If you're not sure how to do this:

Step 1. Type Event Viewer in the Windows 10 search box. Then right click the best match Event Viewer and choose Run as Administrator.
Step 2. Click on Windows Logs, then Application and look for red exclamation point icon error logs that reference the WarintheEast2.exe application.
Step 3. If you find any, please post the info in the details here.

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 9:10:21 PM)

Have to research to see if I can disable Antivirus ...

But there are a bunch of errors in event log, I've attached one, note the errors are all 1000 but the details vary, I could provide a few more if it helps.

Helpless -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 9:13:07 PM)

Can you check if you got a crash dump file name WarInTheEast2.exe.<number>.dmp in C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\CrashDumps ?

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 9:28:18 PM)

There are a bunch of crash dumps.

The files are 101MB so they are too large (also first had to change .dmp to .txt to get the interface to accept it ... that's when it told me it's too large.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 9:32:58 PM)

If you can zip them up they should be much smaller, perhaps small enough to attach here. If not, you can e-mail them to me at erikr@matrixgames.com or put them up in wetransfer.com (it's free) and share a link to the download here.

Helpless -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 9:33:38 PM)

Yes, it is too large for the forum, although zipping can make it way smaller.

You can try to upload last dump to the free filesharing service, ex https://wetransfer.com/, and provide a link. Thanks!

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 9:35:40 PM)

Zip worked, here is one of the crash dumps.

...Ooh, and thanks for all your help on this.

Helpless -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 10:18:28 PM)

Thanks for the dump.

It looks like it is caused by the speech recognition service which is dispatching messages to the window during it's creation. I was able to replicate it on my pc.

Can you try to disable speech recognition in control panel, if it is on of cause?

Helpless -> RE: Game fails on load (3/25/2021 10:49:29 PM)

Attached an exe which might fix startup issue.

Please give it a try, just keep in mind this is a version which is still under the test.

kosigan86 -> RE: Game fails on load (3/26/2021 6:40:37 AM)

I was getting crashes whenever I attempted to load a scenario. Disabling "Run as Administrator" and all the DPI settings, plus adding the linked BETA .exe fixed the issue entirely. Just FYI.

Steelers708 -> RE: Game fails on load (3/26/2021 7:07:11 AM)

I too was having the same issue of a white box and then nothing, having tried all your other suggestions a clean install and your Beta exe seems to have solved the problem thank you.

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/26/2021 8:41:55 AM)

So I disable the speech recognition and the game started. Do you want me to load the beta as well? ... or only if I want to reenable speech recognition?

Helpless -> RE: Game fails on load (3/26/2021 10:56:18 AM)

If you could try it with speech recognition on, it would give us another prove. Anyway, thanks for the logs and confirmation.

hansatuofd -> RE: Game fails on load (3/26/2021 2:00:16 PM)

Copied new .exe to replace original .exe. turned on speech recognition to run at startup. Restarted computer. Started game and it runs OK with speech recognition enabled.

Thanks!

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/26/2021 2:21:39 PM)

Great news, thank you for confirming that.

dethbass -> RE: Game fails on load (3/28/2021 1:31:13 AM)

I had the exact same issue as the original poster.

For me closing Cortana fixed the issue

/S

Erik Rutins -> RE: Game fails on load (3/29/2021 5:08:31 PM)

Please give this new 4k/DPI Hotfix a try:
